To celebrate 50 years of the Rocky Horror Show movie, University Games has launched this raucous party game for players to join in this bizarre plot as the main characters to have fun! The show started as a musical before coming to the big screen. Personally, I have not watched this 1975 movie before but judging by the movie poster of the cast, this movie must be insanely bizarre! Indeed, this game is also very bizarre where players get to role-play, sing and dance.
The Rocky Horror Show game is suitable for ages 14 and upwards and for two to six players. This game comes with a rectangular board that is split into three sections (Act I, II and III), six character pieces with stands, six character cards, 30 LIPS, 50 Rocky Horror Show cards, 30 Lab cards, six Time Warp cards, six-piece Rocky Puzzle, die and three game cards.
The six characters are Brad Majors, Janet Weiss, Dr. Frank N Furter, Dr Scott, Magenta and Riff Raff. Each comes with a character card that explains the characters’ special skills. Players should read the character card carefully to understand the character itself and to get into character.
The number of players will reflect on the characters to play. For example, if there are only two players, play Brad and Janet characters. Three players will play Brad, Janet and Riff Raff. Four players will play Brad, Janet, Riff Raff and Magenta. Five players play Brad, Janet, Riff Raff, Magenta and Dr. Frank N Furter. Of course, six players will play all the characters.
The game is split into three stages. From entering the castle, then to the lab, before escaping the castle. Setting up is straightforward. Each player starts with one LIPS and places the character pieces on the Start car space at the top of the game board.
Any players can read out the Game Card for Act I: Enter the Castle. Follow the instructions on the card and players try to get into the castle by taking a Rocky Horror Show card and rolling the die.
After completing Act I, move on to Act II and then Act III. For Act II, you will need to complete the Rocky puzzle and earn LIPS. Before you start Act III, you will need to stand and sing along (lyrics are printed on the Time Warp cards). To be honest, we all didn’t know how the song goes, hence we had to search for it. This sing-along will help get everyone in the mood.
As we had not watched the movie before, it was quite hard for all of us to relate to the characters. Nevertheless, it was not difficult to follow the game format. We did read out loud everyone’s character card to get to know the characters better and this helped to earn more LIPS. To win the game, players have to escape the castle with 5 LIPS.
I think it would be best to watch the movie before playing this game so that everyone can get into the characters. In order to do this, you should gather your family and friends to watch the movie together and play the game after! It would make a great night in!
The materials of this game are well-made and easy to play. It will be a great game for fans of the show and anyone who loves horror-themed board games. It is available to buy on Amazon, online and in shops.
