Swedish Cuisine We Enjoyed in Gotherburg, Sweden

24 January 2025 by Eileen

This was my first visit to Sweden, and instead of flying, we took a four-hour train ride from Oslo Central Station to Gothenburg Station. As many know, Swedish meatballs are one of Sweden’s iconic dishes, and let’s not forget that Sweden is also home to IKEA!

Swedish Cuisine We Enjoyed in Gothenburg

Here are some of the famous foods and dishes we tried during our trip to Gothenburg:

Meatballs at Restaurang Kungstorget

On our first night, we dined at Restaurang Kungstorget, conveniently located within walking distance of our hotel. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and situated on the ground floor of the Avalon Hotel.

We ordered their classic Swedish meatballs, served with creamy gravy, lingonberry jam, and potato puree. The meatballs were generously sized and delicious.

Since I don’t eat beef, I opted for their seafood soup instead. Unlike the fish soups we had in Oslo, this seafood stew had a rich tomato and cream base and was packed with white fish, shrimp, mussels, sherry vinegar, and garlic bread. It was flavourful and hearty.

After dinner, we explored the town. Gothenburg has a charming atmosphere, with a mix of well-known restaurants, fast food outlets, and shopping malls. It was a pleasant evening stroll.

Seafood Feast at Feskekörka

The next day, we decided to visit Feskekörka, Gothenburg’s iconic indoor seafood market. Though it was far from our hotel, we walked there to enjoy the sights along the way. Unfortunately, we entered the wrong side of the market and had to walk around to find the restaurant entrance.

The market was bustling with people, and the restaurant was fully booked. We waited for about 15 minutes before securing a table.

We started with shrimp sandwiches and fresh oysters from the restaurant. Then, we bought three King Crab legs from a seafood shop within the market and decided to eat them at the restaurant. Normally, outside food isn’t allowed in the dining area, as the shop’s items are intended for takeaway, but the staff kindly allowed us to enjoy them on-site.

The King Crab meat was incredibly fresh and sweet. While I would have preferred it with more seasoning or flavours, it was still a delightful experience overall.

A Quick Stop at Willy’s

After our seafood feast, we headed to the nearby supermarket, Willy’s, for some last-minute shopping. It was a great way to end our food adventure in Gothenburg!
