6 Habits of Highly Successful Mumpreneurs

4 July 2023 by Eileen

Balancing parental duties and running a profitable business may seem like an impossible proposition. But as any doe-eyed child would say, there’s no task big enough for mum!

While mumpreneurs isn’t a term defined by any dictionary, it’s a fairly common occurrence, referring to a full-time parent who also runs a business, typically in their home environment.

Many mumpreneurs succeed in their respective fields. That said, there are even more that are unfortunately unable to keep up with the demands of running a business and enjoying family time simultaneously.

If you want to ensure that your business plan succeeds without compromising your role as a present mother, then you’ve come to the right place.

6 Habits of Highly Successful Mumpreneurs

This article will get into the nitty-gritty of six habits and behaviours that top mumpreneurs possess. We hope that by being aware of these habits, you can adopt them in your personal life and reach your entrepreneurial goals.

Let’s start!

1. They Are Excellent at Time Management

Being a mum is a full-time job. From cooking meals to doing the laundry, there are many little things you have to do throughout the day to maintain a sense of order in the household.

That said, running a business as a mum also entails a high degree of commitment. You can’t just neglect your business at your whim; the whole operations and momentum your business has been riding on could crumble if you do.

Successful mumpreneurs know when to focus and for how long. They can compartmentalize tasks in their head, giving ample time and thought to each obligation without compromising on the other.

They have detailed schedules, fixed timelines, and a rigid daily routine, but they’re able to adapt to the dynamic nature of their roles too.

These mumpreneurs don’t whine or complain about the hectic state of their schedule; they show up and get the work done. And they do it gracefully and consistently.

2. They’re Masters at Delegating Tasks

You can be the most skilled at what you do, but if your aim is financial freedom, then you need outside assistance and extra hands to help you out.

Successful mumpreneurs who run big companies know the importance of hiring competent staff. They get the best people to do the job—potentially even better than them in certain departments—and place them in roles in the company that best harnesses their skills.

By doing this, these mumpreneurs can take a step back from active involvement in the company and have more time for their family and kids.

That said, your kids aren’t mere beneficiaries of this philosophy. If you have an older child, make sure that you’ve trained them to do tasks around the house, whether it be making the bed, washing the dishes, or sweeping the floor.

Having these tasks off your checklist can give you more time for yourself. It’s also generally a great way to instil discipline in your child, which is something they’ll carry for the rest of their lives.

3. They Find Time to Learn

With how packed a schedule is for the average mum, it can feel impossible (and even draining) to squeeze in the time to fill your brain with extra knowledge.

But successful mumpreneurs are a whole different beast. Despite their tight schedules, they always see to it that they’re learning something new every day.

Whether it be learning a new technological tool to streamline operations or participating in a mastermind group meeting with other entrepreneurs, successful mumpreneurs always find time in the day to devote themselves to learning.

With how dynamic the world and certain industries can be, it’s an incredibly important habit to be receptive to new market behaviour. This way, they’ll spot and capitalise on opportunities more readily, which can potentially lead to better business outcomes in the long run.

4. They Participate in Self-Care

Mumpreneurs, at the end of the day, are humans like you and me. They can be very productive on certain days. But at some point, they’ll want to do nothing more than plop down on their bed, decompress, and tune out of the world around them.

It’s easy to forget about one’s well-being amidst all the hustling, but successful mumpreneurs have a keen understanding of the importance of keeping their emotional health and sanity in check.

Working day in and day out with no breaks can lead to all sorts of negative emotions towards what you do. This sense of burnout can bring all forward momentum to a grinding halt—and successful mumpreneurs are no strangers to this reality.

Whether it’s by taking a hot bath, exercising, indulging in a hobby, or meditating, these ladies make it a point to set aside time for themselves. By looking after their well-being, they can show up as the best version of themselves in both their personal and professional life.

Even when the going gets tough, mumpreneurs do find time to rest. This plays a significant role in enhancing their productivity, creativity, and overall performance in their entrepreneurial journey.

5. They Continually Set and Review Goals

Successful mumpreneurs may be adaptable, but they don’t turn a blind eye to their overarching goals. They remain steadfast to these goals, often reviewing their efforts and ensuring that they remain grounded in their professional mission.

These don’t only apply to long-term goals. Mumpreneurs also set smaller, short-term targets that align with their larger vision. Regardless of their goal size, though, they always ensure that their goals follow the SMART principles.

Successful mumpreneurs regularly review and revise their goals, assessing their overall progress and adjusting their trajectory appropriately. This consistent evaluation helps them stay focused and motivated for their greater cause.

6. They Cultivate Relationships

You don’t necessarily have to be a people-person to succeed as a mumpreneur, but it certainly helps to be in good standing with everyone you work with.

To do this, you should treat everyone you work with respectfully, whether they’re your staff, your business partners, or your customers.

It’s also great to have a network of like-minded individuals who can help you get through tough or uncertain phases in your entrepreneurial journey.

Running a business can get lonely, so having a support system that understands your struggles can be a great way to feel more committed to achieving your goals.

By cultivating your network, you’ll have more opportunities to contribute to your community and collaborate with other businesses. These can, in turn, lead to the expansion and increased reach of your business in due time.
