Building a Wooden Children’s Bookshelf: A DIY Guide

28 June 2023 by Eileen

Encouraging children to develop a love for reading is a wonderful gift that will benefit them throughout their lives. A wooden bookshelf specifically designed for children can not only provide an organised space for their books but also ignite their imagination and foster a sense of independence. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of creating a charming and functional wooden bookshelf for children.

Building a Wooden Children’s Bookshelf A DIY Guide

Planning and Design

Before embarking on any woodworking project, it is crucial to plan and design your bookshelf. Consider the available space in the child’s room or play area and determine the desired dimensions for the bookshelf. Take into account the height and width of the shelves, ensuring they are suitable for the child’s age and accessible for them to reach their books.

Gathering Materials and Tools

To construct a wooden bookshelf for children, you will need the following materials and tools:

Materials:

  • High-quality Wood: Choose a sturdy wood that is both durable and aesthetically pleasing. Common options include pine, birch, or plywood.
  • Wood Screws: Wood screws are ideal for joining the pieces of wood together securely. Select screws of an appropriate length for the thickness of the wood you’re using.
  • Wood Glue: Use wood glue to reinforce the joints and add extra stability to your bookshelf.
  • Sandpaper: Smooth the surfaces of the wood and remove any rough edges with sandpaper.
  • Non-Toxic Paint or Stain: If desired, apply non-toxic paint or stain to enhance the appearance of the bookshelf. Opt for child-friendly colours that complement the room’s decor.

Tools:

  • Measuring Tape and Ruler: These tools will help you accurately measure and mark the dimensions of the bookshelf.
  • Circular Saw or Hand Saw: Use a circular saw or hand saw to cut the wood into the desired sizes.
  • Drill and Drill Bits: A drill is necessary for pre-drilling holes and driving the wood screws.
  • Screwdriver: You’ll need a screwdriver to tighten the wood screws securely.

Constructing the Bookshelf

  • Cutting the Wood: Measure and mark the dimensions of the bookshelf on the wood. Use a circular saw or hand saw to cut the pieces according to your design. You will need vertical sides, horizontal shelves, and a back panel.
  • Preparing the Pieces: Sand all the surfaces of the wood to ensure they are smooth and splinter-free. Round off the edges to create a child-friendly bookshelf.
  • Assembling the Bookshelf: Begin by attaching the shelves to the vertical sides. Apply wood glue to the edges of the shelves and secure them in place using wood screws. Pre-drill holes to prevent splitting. Repeat this process for each shelf, ensuring they are evenly spaced.
  • Adding the Back Panel: Attach the back panel to the bookshelf by applying wood glue to the edges and securing it with wood screws. This will provide additional stability and prevent books from falling through the back.
  • Finishing Touches: If desired, apply non-toxic paint or stain to the bookshelf, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow sufficient drying time before placing books on the shelves.

Placing and Organizing Books

Once the bookshelf is complete and dry, arrange the books on the shelves in an organised and visually appealing manner. Consider categorising the books by genre, author, or size to make it easier for children to find their favourites.

Building a wooden bookshelf for children is a rewarding and practical project that encourages their love for reading while adding charm to their room or play area. By following these steps and utilising child-safe materials, you can create a functional and visually appealing bookshelf that will inspire and engage young readers. So, gather your tools, unleash your creativity, and embark on this DIY journey to cultivate a lifelong love for books in your children.
