Chinese New Year Ang Pow Lucky Eight Wall Display

5 January 2023 by Eileen

Lucky lucky eight is so many Chinese people’s favourite number because eight (八 ba) sounds like 發 (fa) in Chinese, which means wealth, fortune, and prosperity! Hence many will pay extra for the number 8 in their phone number, car plate, house number and many more!

This is why today, we are making a lucky eight wall display for this Chinese New Year 2023. In fact, this lucky eight is an add-on from the Chinese coin lantern!  It measures approximately 32 cm by 20 cm by 3 cm. It is so easy to make and I am rating the difficulty 1.5 out of 5, which should take roughly 30 minutes to complete.

This craft will work well with thick red ang pows. If you can’t find those, you can add plain cards into the ang pow to help keep the shape of the ang pow.

To make this, you will require:

  • 14 rectangle ang pows / red envelopes (approx. 7.6 cm by 11.5 cm)
  • Stapler & staples
  • Optional: 50 – 60 cm red string, Chinese knot tassel or double-sided tape

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Fold the ang pow into half horizontally but don’t press the fold all the way down. Instead, just press the two corners of the join down. This is a marker for later use.

  2. Fold all four corners of the ang pow inwards. Make sure that you fold the front of the ang pow inwards to the back of the ang pow. Repeat for the rest of the ang pows.

  3. Staple 7 ang pows for the front of the lantern.

  4. Staple 7 ang pows for the back of the lantern.

  5. Join the front and back of the craft by stapling it.

  6. If you are going to stick it on the wall, then place the double-sided tape on one side of the number 8 wall display. If you would like to hang it, add the red string on the top and a Chinese knot tassel at the bottom.

So what do you think of this lucky eight wall display? Don’t forget to check out the rest of my Chinese New Year crafts!
