Chinese New Year Fan Ang Pow Decoration

26 December 2022 by Eileen

Are you short of ang pows/red packets/red envelopes, but still want to make something for this coming Chinese New Year? Then why not try out this fan ang pow decoration tutorial as it only uses 10 or 12 ang pows, depending on the shape and size of the ang pow. This fan decoration will look great hanging on the ceiling or as a wall decoration.

Chinese New Year Fan Ang Pow Decoration

A few years ago, I blogged about a Chinese New Year ang pow fan, but this craft uses 26 ang pows to make. Also, this craft doesn’t look as nice hanging off the ceiling as it will reveal the back of the fan which is not a vibrant colour ang pow design. However, this ang pow fan decoration will look the same on both front and back and best of all is that this craft is not very complicated at all.

This fan ang pow display measures approximately 34 cm by 17 cm by 4.2 cm, not including the length of the Chinese knot tassel at the bottom and the red string on top. The difficulty rating is 1 out of 5, which should take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

I have used 12 ang pows for this craft, but if you are short of ang pows, you can use 10 ang pows instead. It will just look smaller.

To make this, you will require:

  • 10 or 12 long rectangle ang pows / red envelopes (approx. 9.5 cm by 17 cm)
  • Stapler & staples
  • Ruler
  • Double-sided tape
  • 50 – 60 cm red string
  • Chinese knot decoration

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Find the midpoint of the ang pow by folding the ang pow into half vertically but don’t press the fold all the way down. Instead, just press the bottom corner of the join down. This is a marker for later use.

  2. Place the end of the ruler next to the mark and one end of the ruler to the top right-hand corner of the ang pow. Fold with the ruler as shown.

  3. Now place the end of the ruler next to the mark and one end of the ruler to the top left-hand corner of the ang pow. Fold with the ruler as shown. Repeat for the rest of the ang pows.

  4. To make the front of the fan decoration, place six ang pows as shown and staple them together. I like to staple as close to the fold as possible. Also, I like to put three staples on the ang pows; on the top, middle and bottom. It will make sure the fan decoration doesn’t have any gaps or holes. Staple the Chinese knot ornament in the middle of the fan ang pow decoration.

  5. To make the back of the fan decoration, place six ang pows as shown and staple them together.

  6. Place the double-sided tape on the back of the fan decoration as shown. Also, at both ends of the ang pows.

  7. Place the front and back of the fan decorations together and stick them together. Before sticking the middle part of the ang pows, secure the red string at the top of the fan decoration.

This fan ang pow decoration will look amazing if you use striking vibrant coloured ang pows! Choose your ang pow design wisely. As for the thickness, this craft is suitable for ang pows that are soft or medium thickness.

Hope you like this craft and 祝你一帆风顺
