How To Nail Your Outfit As A Wedding Guest

23 June 2022 by Eileen

Dressing for a wedding can sometimes be challenging because there are many options and rules to follow. You want to turn up and support your loved one through a special moment in their life, but you don’t want to look embarrassingly out of place. Even weddings with dress codes have become so creative that it can be hard to find the balance between personal style and adhering to a dress code. So, are you worried about looking odd as a wedding guest? These tips should help you nail your outfit.

How To Nail Your Outfit As A Wedding Guest

  • Go for a more conservative look

If there’s no dress code or outfit theme to follow, you can err on the side of a conservative look. As eccentric as many wedding themes have become lately, most weddings still do not require you to be too flashy. So, if you find yourself torn between looking extravagant and wearing something smart or simple, go with the latter option. Smart and simple attire is a perfect balance between formal and not so out of place. Men’s wedding ties have a way of adding smartness and class to a simple outfit, so you should consider them. For women, a pair of bright coloured shoes or statement jewellery could be all you need to bring the smartness and style to a simple outfit.

  • Adhere to the dress code

Sure, you have a preferred dressing style, but if an upcoming wedding comes with an expected dress code, you want to adhere to it. The great thing about dress codes is that they make selecting an outfit easier. In addition to the style, dress codes may include preferred colours. It is important to respect the dress code, no matter what it is. Remember, it’s not about you; it’s about the couple. Also, dressing against the code would make you stick out like a sore thumb at the event.

  • Avoid wearing the same colour as the bridesmaids or best men

Of course, no one will criticise you for appearing dressed like the bridesmaids or best men. But if you know what colours they’ll be wearing ahead of time, try opting for different colours or a different shade of those colours

  • Try to avoid an all-white outfit

White tends to be a safe outfit colour for many occasions, bar one – a wedding. And for obvious reasons, you’ll want to avoid an all-white outfit when attending a wedding. This is because white is usually the colour reserved for the bride (even for the groom also, in many cases). Many people also consider it a small taboo to rock white at someone else’s wedding. It’s like you’re planning to steal somebody’s thunder.

  • Consider the season

You cannot ignore the season’s role when deciding what to wear for a wedding. For example, if you’re attending a beach-themed wedding on a warm and beautiful summer day, you would have to lean towards lighter outfit colours with fewer layers. In most cases, summer weddings are pretty colourful, with bright colours dominating. Fall weddings, however, tend to attract richer fabrics with darker jewel-toned colours.
