Top Trumps is one of my favourite childhood travel games. They are so compact and lightweight to take out with you to school or on holiday. While playing the cards with friends, we have also learned a little bit about our favourite cars etc. It is such a simple game to pass the time.
I am pleased to have received HM The Queen Top Trumps cards for review. One of the main attractions of the UK, of course, is Her Majesty the Queen. With Top Trumps, you can learn more about the life and times of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, important landmarks, households and the royal family.
Top Trumps is very simple to play. It can be played with any number of players, as long as the entire deck is split evenly between all players. Each player is dealt a deck face down and they are only allowed to look at the top card in their deck.
One player picks a category listed on their current card and reads it aloud. In this deck, there are four categories – Year, Endurance, Royal Rating and Uniting the Nation. All players compare their numbers in that same category, and the player with the highest number wins all the cards. Then the winner will get to choose the next category. If there is a tie, the cards are set aside until someone wins the next round. To win the game, the person with all the cards at the end wins.
This game is a delightful blend of strategy and luck. Sometimes your best category may still get trumped by another player’s card. You just have to pick the right one and hope no one gets more than you. We loved learning new facts from the game and it makes a lovely compact travel game to take out with you.
