What to Consider When Buying a Housewarming Gift

23 December 2021 by Eileen

Moving into a new home can be a very exciting time for anybody, but it can also get quite stressful and expensive, especially when it comes to buying all the things needed for the new home. If you have a loved one or friend who is moving into a new home, getting them a thoughtful housewarming gift can relieve some of their stress or even help them with getting something that they are going to need for their home. Knowing what to get for a housewarming gift can sometimes be tricky, as you will want to get something that is thoughtful but also useful or personal to the recipient for their new living space. Whether you’re buying for a friend, family member, work colleague or somebody else, here are some tips and tricks to keep in mind when buying the perfect housewarming gift.

What to Consider When Buying a Housewarming Gift

Add a Personal Touch

One of the first things that most people do when they move into a new home is put their own stamp on the place. This could involve decorating the home to how they like it or simply putting up photos and making the house feel like their home. Because of this, personal items are always appreciated as housewarming gifts. You could print of some of their favourite photos that they’ve uploaded to Facebook to make a collage photo frame for them to display in their home or make canvas prints for them to hang up using Photobox. Photobox’s canvas prints are easy to make and you can do it from the comfort of your own home using your computer or smartphone. All you need to do is head to the website or app, select the canvas size that you want, and upload the photo that you want to print, before ordering and waiting for it to be delivered.

Get Something Useful

If you are buying a gift for somebody who is moving into their first home, then chances are that they will also have the additional expense of getting everything that they need for the house. While useful gifts might not be the most exciting of options, they can often be the most appreciated since they save money and serve a purpose. Small kitchen accessories, such as blenders, air fryers, slow cookers, or even a sandwich toaster can make a great housewarming gift. You might want to stay away from the basics like a toaster, kettle or microwave since chances are that your recipient has already got these covered as a priority.

Add Some Comfort

Moving home is no cheap feat, and for some people, this means that they have to wait a while before they are able to afford to add some home comforts to their new place. Because of this, consider gifts that will add some comfort and cosiness to the home like throws, cushions, curtains, and rugs. You can even make personalised cushions using their photos or get a cushion made up with their name and the date that they moved in, for example, if you want to add a more personal touch. High-quality bedding is always a good gift to give, and one of the best things about this type of gift is that it isn’t just useful but is also a special and unique gift idea with many different options available allowing you to put in a lot of thought and effort to find something that they will really like.

Consider the Home Itself

When buying a housewarming gift, if you want to get an item for using around the home then it is important to think about the home itself. For example, if you know somebody who has moved into a property with a large garden, then some good gift ideas to consider could be gardening supplies or even kits that they could use to make the most of their new outdoor space by growing their own vegetables or certain types of plants. On the other hand, if somebody has moved into a rather small house, then gifts that are going to help them utilise the limited amount of space might be appreciated more than larger items. Whether somebody has moved into a flat or a house might also be something that you need to consider when buying a housewarming gift. Along with this, think about whether they are renting or have bought the house as rental homes might have less options for decorating so some gift ideas might not work very well.

Home Accessories

Home accessories are also items that often fall into the category of waiting to buy later after getting over the initial expenses of moving into a new home, and these will also make excellent housewarming gifts. You really can’t go wrong with a scented candle or a small to medium sized house plant with most people – although if you’re getting a house plant, it’s probably best to check for any allergies first. If you’re getting a housewarming gift on a budget, these accessories can be an ideal choice and there are certainly enough options to choose something form that is thoughtful and you know they are going to really appreciate.

Get Useful Kitchen Stuff

Kitting out a new kitchen is not always easy. Once again, boring gifts might win here since for people who have just moved into a new home for the first time and don’t have a lot of things that they have been able to bring with them, getting things like kitchen gadgets, good quality cookware, pans, crockery and utensils can be quite expensive. A knife block with some good-quality knives, a high-quality chopping board set, pan set, or designer plates, bowls, cups, and other tableware items can make great gift ideas, especially if they don’t currently have these items or are having to make do with the cheapest options due to the expense of moving into a new home.

Vouchers

Sometimes it can be hard to decide what to get somebody as a housewarming gift if they already have all the items that they need for their home right now, or you’re not sure what they need the most. In this situation, a voucher isn’t a lazy gift at all but more of a sensible way to ensure that your gift idea is useful for them. A voucher is a great idea since it allows the recipient to spend it whenever they like, rather than getting something new for their home right now that might not be convenient for them if they are renovating, for example. It also allows them to spend on things that they need that you may not have thought of, plus they can save the voucher for later so that if anything comes up in the future that they don’t need right now, it can be used.

Buying a housewarming gift can sometimes be an overwhelming experience since you want to get something useful, but also thoughtful. No matter who you are buying for, there are lots of gift ideas that can help to reduce some of the stress of moving into a new home and put a smile on the recipient’s face. From personalised gifts to useful gifts, there are plenty of options to consider.
