How to Keep your Loft Conversion Cool this Summer

1 April 2021 by Eileen

In summer it can be frustrating when you go upstairs to sleep and find that the higher up your house you go, the hotter the house becomes. It can lead to an uncomfortable night’s sleep which nobody enjoys in the humid summer! When you think of having a loft conversion, you may believe that having a bedroom in a loft space could end up being sweltering in these hotter months, but there are many ways you can keep your loft conversion cool and airy in the summertime.

How to Keep your Loft Conversion Cool this Summer

When you design your loft conversion it is important that you think of how you want your room to feel at all times of the year. In Winter you want it to be warm and cosy, and in the summer, it needs to be bright and airy. A great way of controlling the temperature of your loft space is to have different ventilation options like windows and balconies. Of course, you will most likely also have radiators and, in some cases, air conditioning units, but there are more energy efficient ways to regulate temperature.

Skylights are a great way of having a well-ventilated loft bedroom or living area, as they bring lots of light into your loft space and can be opened to allow in cooler air and let out the hot air that rises from all levels of your home. You can reduce the amount of heat allowed in through your skylights by having summer blinds which reflect the heat away from the room but still allow some light to filter through. Alternatively, you can use blackout blinds to completely block the sunlight from entering your loft conversion on the hottest of days if you prefer.

An even better way of letting out hot stuffy air is to have a Juliet balcony in your loft conversion. These are stunning balcony doors which open up your loft and allow plenty of fresh air inside, without bringing in much direct sunlight (depending on which way your loft faces). You can have net curtains to block out the sun’s rays whilst still getting the fresh air from outside. A Juliet balcony can make your home feel like the most romantic of summer getaways in the peak of summer, you can just imagine being in Italy looking out from your balcony!

Finally, if you want to really enjoy your loft conversion in the heat of summer, Simply Loft can create your dream roof terrace for you to entertain guests and sunbathe on. Roof terraces are becoming increasingly more popular in busy cities like London and Birmingham, being the perfect place to have an ice-cold drink in the sun after a busy day at work in the city. A loft conversion can be the perfect addition to your home, even in the hot months of summer!
