Just One Game Review

23 August 2020 by Eileen Leave a Comment

Just One is a simple, yet challenging co-operative word game where everyone uses just one word each to win the game! This game even won the 2019 Spiel des Jahres, Germany’s game of the year award, which is intended to highlight an outstanding design that would be ideal for German families! It is suitable for three to seven players, and from age eight onwards.

The game consists of 110 cards, which equates to 550 words to guess, seven easels, seven felt markers and instructions.

just one game set up

Setting up the game is very straightforward. Each player gets an easel and a marker. Then shuffle the cards and draw 13 cards to create a face-down deck in the middle of the table. Randomly select a player to receive a card and he/she must place the card on the easel without seeing the card. The player then chooses a number between 1 to 5 and the other players have to provide a one-word clue for this mystery word. He/she then has to guess the mystery word once everyone writes it down on the easel. Everyone has to try to write their best clue as any identical clues will be cancelled! If the player guesses correctly, you win the card. If the player guesses wrongly, then no point is scored.

I like how the instructions are written clearly and are easy to understand. We were able to start the game fairly quickly once we were all set up. The game helps everyone increase their use of vocabulary and maybe learn a new word or two! It is an interesting game and is portable enough to be used as a travel game too. It is available in good toy stores, online and Amazon.
