LEGO Sustainable Star Wars Advent Calendar

6 December 2017 by Eileen

Did you know that LEGO has launched a sustainable advent calendar ahead of Christmas, which aims to save around a million plastic trays from landfills this year? The sustainable advent calendars are available in three themes: LEGO Star Wars, LEGO City and LEGO Friends.

Children can now enjoy their advent calendars well beyond 25th December. The 2017 series features sustainable paper pulp trays and are available in approximately 60% of advent calendars.

We were delighted to receive this sustainable LEGO Star Wars set which comes with a tray that is made from 100% Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper, and can be recycled along with the box.

Since 2013, the average size of LEGO boxes has been reduced by 14%. By using smaller boxes, they have so far saved approximately 10,000 truckloads, over 20,000 tonnes of cardboard, and CO2 emissions by 35,000 tonnes.

In this advent calendar, it contains a different LEGO toy to build each day in each of the 24 compartments of the tray. Once you have finished building, the empty trays can be used for a whole host of arts & craft ideas or perhaps filled with soil to grow plants.

LEGO has created a short film that inspires children (and adults alike) to repurpose their new sustainable tray into something entirely different – allowing it to live on beyond the holiday season. This move from the toy manufacturer, plays on a child’s preoccupation with often enjoying the wrapping paper and packaging just as much as their presents and provides an opportunity for them to get creative during the festivities.

How to Create a Snowman from your LEGO Advent Calendar

  • Step 1: Open your LEGO advent calendar
  • Step 2: Take out the sustainable tray
  • Step 3: Cut off cup using a pair of scissors
  • Step 4: Remove base of cup by cutting around with a pair of scissors
  • Step 5: Prick the toothpick into the small Styrofoam ball, then into the cup
  • Step 6: Decorate your snowman and put on a scarf.

Alternatively, you can use the tray to make a penguin, BB8, reindeer etc.

Or use the paper pulp tray to grow plants. The compartments in the tray are ideal to fill with soil to germinate a seedling which children can later plant in a garden, and make a positive impact on the environment.

We love this Star Wars advent calendar and also love the concept behind this to improve the sustainability of LEGO packaging! If you have bought the sustainable Advent Calendar, try and make use of it and get creative!  It is available to buy from good toy retailers and Amazon.  Do check out our LEGO Friends Advent Calendar review!
