Young Driver Electric Firefly Review

26 November 2017 by Eileen

Young Driver Electric Firefly is a one of a kind two seater car designed specifically for children aged five to ten, to help them master the basics of driving. If you are looking for an ideal Christmas gift this year, why not treat them to a chance to get behind the wheel of a car! Young Driver is offering my readers 15% off for a Firefly lesson using code ET15, valid until 22nd Dec 2017 online or over the phone.

Young Driver Electric Firefly review

Young Driver is a well-established driving school for the under 17 at more than 50 venues across the UK since 2009. Their aim is to help to teach youngsters to drive over a longer period, therefore encouraging a safer generation of new drivers at 17. Last year September 2016, Young Driver Motor Cars Ltd, a subsidiary of Young Driver, launched Firefly, the world’s first electric car developed specially for five to ten year old at selected venues.

We were so pleased we were invited to Birmingham NEC Young Driver to give them a test drive! Ms C and Mr K were so excited that even the freezing weather didn’t detract from their enjoyment! They are located at North 11 car park and the Firefly is located opposite the Young Driver car park. It is not too difficult to find them. The Firefly occupies a good size car park filled with cones and road signs. During our lessons, there were only two Firefly vehicles on the track at one time.

We were so lucky with the weather that it didn’t rain while we were there! The lessons are 20 minutes each and we had both children on different slots overlapping one another. During the first ten minutes, they spent time learning the basics of driving like learning to use and control the car, read road signs and negotiate the roundabout.

It was really fun seeing them get nervous and try to avoid those cones! Occasionally, they did run over and flatten them! The roundabout is trickier for them but they got the hang of it and did enjoy the drive.

For the next last ten minutes, a parent is invited to ride along with the child if they want to. Mr C was with Mr K, while I was with Ms C. There were a number of times I had to stop myself steering her wheels! The electric car does look quite slow moving but when you first sit in it, the car is quite smooth and quick.

Once they completed their lesson, they each received their own personalised driving licence. If you decide to go back for another lesson, your child can learn how to do reverse parking.

Both of them were really keen and had fun doing it! Besides having fun driving around the course, they also picked up tips of driving around the roundabout and road safety. I would definitely recommend them!

Mr K is now really keen to do the lesson for 10 to 17 when he grows taller to 1.42 metres and above! He loves the ideas of getting behind the wheel of a brand new dual control Vauxhall Corsa SRi car! For this lesson, the drivers get to experience everything from gear changing and emergency braking to parallel parking and negotiating a slalom. They also get a Drive Diary to monitor their progress!

I think these are a great idea, a gradual introduction to driving so it’s not so scary at 17 is great!
