BrainBox Myths & Monsters Review

9 February 2017 by Eileen

Myths & Monsters is a brand new ten minute brain challenge game from BrainBox. The game will take you around the world exploring myths and legends. It features scenes from the stories, with captions summarising the action. This game will help improve observation and memory skills for all the family.

It is suitable for ages 8 years and above for one or more players. Inside this magnetic cube-shaped box, there are 55 beautifully illustrated cards, one rules card, one sand timer and one die. The cards are made from a minimum of 70% recycled material. They seem to be acceptably durable and it should last for a long time. The magnetic cube-shaped box is sturdy and great for storage.

The object of the game is to study a card for 10 seconds and then answer a question based on the roll of a die. If the question is answered correctly, the card is kept, and the person with the most number of cards after 10 minutes is the winner.

The structure of the questions is very simple and easy to understand. It is basically a memory game and at the same time you learn the stories behind these myths and monsters. The pictures are clear and well illustrated. The diamond-shaped die displays numbers instead of dots but has 8 sides!

Both of my children were very excited about this game as they have learnt some of the Greek and Roman myths at school and they have both managed to tell me the stories behind them. This is definitely very interesting for me as I have never learned these growing up in Singapore. Mr K is very keen to use the timer and sets himself high expectations to score plenty of cards. Whilst Ms C prefers to take her own sweet time to learn the cards. I didn’t use the timer for her as I prefer my daughter to ask me questions so that I can guide her through the cards.

This game is excellent value for money especially given the broad way it encourages family play, independent play, mental challenge and memory training. It is a perfect educational game.

We all enjoy playing it and I also learn with them at the same time. We all love this game. It is educational, fun and engaging. It’s also a convenient size to take with you on a long road trip. To learn more about BrainBox, please visit their blog for details: http://www.brainbox.co.uk/blog
