Othello Classic Game from John Adams

16 September 2016 by Eileen

Othello is a classic fast paced strategy game that takes me back to my childhood when I often played it with my sisters.  I remember in those days the board were very chunky with a plastic surface compared to this new classic board which is much lighter and elegant and comes with a felt surface.

Othello Classic is the internationally acclaimed two player strategy game where you need to think a step ahead to outwit your opponent. It is suitable for two players aged seven and up.  It comes complete with 64 reversible disks and one playing board. Once you take the playing board out of the box, it requires you to insert the rubbery playing board ‘feet’ on to the playing board which will stay permanently.  The playing board comes with grooves which ensures the disks stay in place when placed.

To set up the game, each player is allocated a colour; white or black. Then place four disks in the middle of the board with two of black’s disks and two of white’s disks. The aim of the game is to be the player who has the majority of their own coloured disks showing on the board at the end of the game. You must try to trap your rival’s disks by ‘sandwiching’ them with your own coloured disks. Once you have trapped them, you can turn their disks over to your colour but watch out, your opponent will do the same to you! This is a very quick game that requires you to keep thinking!

I am delighted to introduce my favourite childhood game to Mr K. It took him awhile to understand how to plan his move and he still has a lot to learn from me. I still remember I always make sure I got my disks into each corner space to make sure that my rival could not over turn the whole line of disks!

I love this simple and yet fun classic game!  We all enjoy playing it and would definitely recommend it!  It is available to buy from good toy stores and Amazon.

I do find that this travel pocket is slightly too small for my liking. I was not able to flip the playing discs very easily. Mr K often had to help me as my fingers are far too big to flip in between the spaces given. We all love this simple, yet fun classic game! Do check out our review on the original classic board game.
