Disney Art Academy

July 28, 2016 by Eileen Leave a Comment

Disney Art Academy is a tutorial game that teaches you to draw 80 beloved characters from Disney and Pixar’s best movies, featuring the legendary Mickey Mouse, Elsa from Disney’s Frozen, and Big Hero Six’s Baymax, using a bundle of different drawing tools.

disney art acedemyBefore you start venturing on your own, you are taught through tutorials the basics of drawing on the 3DS touchscreen using your stylus to create art!

There are 40 lessons to complete.  Each time you complete a lesson with Professor Ian, you will unlock more lessons and get a star reward which you can track your progress at the Clubhouse.  The game makes you follow through the lesson without skipping.  You begin with Starter to learn the basics, then Beginner to learn about Expressions and Portraits, to more advanced lessons like 3D Drawing Techniques to get you to know your toolbox well.  Each time you learn to draw the character, it will be on the ‘Free Paint’ feature.

Ms C has mild colour blindness and she finds some parts of the colouring quite hard to identify – especially white backgrounds.  She struggles slightly on some of the lessons especially when the colour tones are similar.  As for myself, I find that it is quite easy to look at the outline and to follow.  We like the undo feature instead of using an eraser – it’s much better to undo a mistake than to rub some of the drawing out as you could end up rubbing too much off.

Each lesson probably takes us 10 minutes to complete and each time Professor Ian clearly explains the reasons behind the drawing and the steps.  The whole learning process is very challenging and Ms C likes that she can add some Disney magic by adding stars, glitter, clouds, and the Magic Brush.

This game required you to have a SD card so that you can save your drawing which you can view at the clubhouse.  Then you can either print them out or share them with your friends over Miiverse, social media or local wireless.

Overall this game teaches you the techniques for drawing which can be applied to any drawing, not just Disney.  This game is great for all aspiring artists young or old, but especially for Disney fans.
