Hello Fresh Review

2 June 2016 by Eileen

Hello Fresh not only deliver fresh ingredients but it also comes with a lot of inspirational recipes for you and your family to try out.  I love that they supply you with the exact ingredients and different recipes each week.  Also last year, they worked with Jamie Oliver to give their customers more options to try out Jamie Oliver’s recipes.

hello fresh box

Last week, I had the chance to try out their family box which included 4 meals for 4 – 5 persons. The box was very well packaged and the meats are separated in the ice bag and the fresh vegetables on the other side of the box. There were no dents on the meat packets nor squashed/flat vegetables. I like that there is not much of plastic waste on most of the vegetables except the herbs and salad. I quickly unpacked everything and it almost filled up all the space in my fridge! I was glad to have a relatively empty fridge to start the week. Phew! The meats had a good 5 – 6 days of expiry left, which I prioritised cooking those recipes first.

The recipe cards are really convenient to use and provide step by step instructions with photos. I find having good photos on the recipe cards really helpful. Each meal was easy to prepare and ready within 35 minutes to an hour. Also I loved the unusual and interesting recipes which I would never have thought of cooking.

Normally, I tend to cook the usual Chinese meals as this is what I am comfortable cooking with.  So last week, I got to learn to cook these four super recipes:

  • Creamy leek and mustard chicken with stir fried green beans
  • Hoisin duck with fragrant basmati rice, cucumber and coriander
  • Hearty Toulouse sausage cassoulet with a kick of chilli
  • Thyme roasted chicken and potatoes with spinach and buttered radishes

These recipes went down very well in our family especially as we tried out new vegetables like leeks, radishes and green beans which are not normally part of our diet. My children have never been too experimental but they surprised me and ate it all. Also cooking with mustard seeds was an experience! I didn’t know they can jump so high when you leave them in the pan for too long!  Oops!

Overall we are very delighted with the choice of recipes and would highly recommend them to anyone.  They are so much easier to order online than if you were shopping for separate ingredients from an online supermarket. All you need to do is select the box for classic, veggie and family. There is no wastage of ingredients or sauces as they provide the right amount but sometimes you may have surplus vegetable. They are perfect for any busy couples or families and elderly who might have mobility restrictions. Do check them out at their Hello Fresh website.

This is a showcase of my dishes:

Disclosure: We received the sample for the purposes of writing this review, however all thoughts and opinions remain our own.

Can you select whether you want meat or fish in these?

Maybe but I’m not sure! This week my box come with fish, turkey and chicken. I have no dietary requirements, but you could let them know if you are gluten free, veg etc. So it is worth to ask them. I’m pretty sure, they are very flexible.
