The star-studded British ensemble cast includes Mathew Baynton (The Wrong Mans, You, Me and the Apocalypse), Simon Farnaby (Paddington), Martha Howe-Douglas (Doctor Foster), Jim Howick (Peep Show, Stag), Helen McCrory (Skyfall, Peaky Blinders) and Damian Lewis (Homeland). BILL was written by two of its stars – Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond.
This is the story of Bill Shakespeare (Baynton) who is a hapless lute player with a big dream. Kicked out of his band, Bill leaves his despairing wife and kids behind in Stratford to seek fame and fortune in London. He’s written a great work for the stage and he’ll prove all the doubters wrong.
In Madrid, King Phillip II of Spain (Willbond) has hatched his latest plan to rid the world of his mortal enemy, Queen Elizabeth (McCrory), and seize the English throne for himself. Sneaking into England with a motley crew of assassins, Phillip fools desperate courtier the Earl of Croydon (Farnaby) into helping with his devilish plot.
Aided by debt-riddled London playwright, Christopher Marlowe (Howick), Bill believes his big break has come when the Earl of Croydon offers to put on his play for Queen Elizabeth. Little does he know that King Phillip is using Shakespeare’s first work as the centrepiece in his plan to assassinate the Queen.
We watched it exclusively last Monday with my children and we all found it laugh out loud funny. The silliness of the comedy really appeals to us, such as the moment when they tried to disguise themselves by sticking moustaches over their moustaches. At first, I thought this is going to be a boring film but not at all. The story is very well rewritten and also hilarious. I would recommend this DVD!
