Interplay FabLab Perfume Review

25 July 2015 by Eileen

The school summer holidays have started and we have been busy mixing, blending and inventing our own unique perfumes! This FabLab perfume kit is from Interplay. It shows you how to mix top, middle and base fragrance notes just like a professional perfumer. This is recommended for ages 8 and over. Both of my children used this under my supervision.

Inside this box, it comes with:

  • 5 fragrances: Musk, Pink Flowers, Fruity, Green & Citrus
  • 4 perfume bottles
  • 5 plastic pipettes
  • Labels
  • Gloves
  • Sheet of paper
  • 12 page instruction booklet

Before you start the mixing, it is recommended that you test each of the fragrances on your skin before use for 30 minutes. If there is no visible redness, you are unlikely to be sensitive to any of the ingredients.

We started off by applying a drop of five different fragrances onto the tray provided, dipped one end of the paper strips and wafted it in front of our nose. Both of them enjoyed doing the smell test! It was very interesting to smell the different fragrances and it was fascinating to see the children’s responses. Out of all five fragrances, Fruity came out the top smell. The citrus is a no-no for me as it smells like a toilet cleaner while my children said it smells refreshing! We also did a blind test for each fragrance too. We all guessed them all correctly!

All the bottles are made from plastic, so they are very lightweight. You have to be very careful not to tip them over. Each small depressions on the tray are for you to use to mix test fragrances or insert the bottle in, as is recommended in the instructions. I didn’t place them in the depressions as I supervised them and passed them around.

There are enough fragrances to mix around 4 bottles of perfume. We did have some leftover fragrances, especially citrus! We just didn’t like the smell for mixing.

Mr K made two bottles of his stinky perfume (lots of citrus & musk) and flower perfume. Ms C made her perfume which she called lovely perfume (lots of fruity and pink flower) and messy perfume. Both of them had a lot of fun just mixing and inventing their own perfume. This is a definitely a great kit for children to explore the smells, play and create their own unique smells!

Do remember that the smell of the perfume might change after 30 minutes, so it is a good idea to test them out before mixing into the bottles. Once mixed, the perfume will only last for 6 months or obviously whenever they are used up.
