Mermaid is the second book written by well-loved CBeebies’ presenter Cerrie Burnell. This beautifully illustrated book is brought to life by Laura Elle Anderson. It was published by Scholastic on 2nd April 2015 and is available to buy via Amazon.
The book is paperback containing about 32 pages and contains a few sentences on each page with a good size font.
This book is about Luka and his friend Sylvia. Luka lives beside the deep silvery sea. He longs to splash in the surf and dive beneath the waves, but he can’t swim. Nor could anyone in Luka’s family. One day, Luka sees a girl called Sylvia gliding through the waves. He has never seen anyone swim so well. When her father helps her out of the sea and into her wheelchair, Luka barely notices it; all he sees is her smile and the power of the sea in her eyes. Sylvia teaches Luka how to swim, and that night, Luka dreams that Sylvia is a mermaid. From then on, Luka knows that he and Sylvia will have lots of adventures together.
This book is very well written and inspirational. I love how Sylvia didn’t let her physical disability limit her daily life and she was able to swim freely. She gave Luka the courage to learn and taught him how to swim. This book is easy to read and both of my children enjoy reading it.
