Ladybird: I’m Ready to Spell review

5 February 2014 by Eileen

Following on from Ladybird’s successful I’m Ready for Phonics app which I had previously reviewed, I’m Ready to Spell is a new Ladybird app. It is the perfect way to support your child’s phonics and spelling, learning in a comprehensive and user-friendly way.  It will encourage and motivate your child to practise their spellings.

In this app, there are three mini space-themed games which split into three different levels: easy, medium and hard. Easy level is for Reception and Year 1.  Medium level contains spellings that children in Year 1 will be learning while hard level is for Year 1, 2 and 3 will be learning, as well as teaching how to spell plurals, compound words, prefixes and suffixes.

The three space themed games are:

Scrambled Spellings

This is to unscramble the letters to complete the word.  It is quite hard for Mr K as he is still learning his words but it is a great challenge for him to find the correct word by listening carefully.

Sinking Spellings

Fill in the missing letter to complete the word by tapping the correct alphabet letter.  Mr K started with the easy level and managed to make good progress each day.  It helps him to think how to use the letters to fill in the gap!

Speedy spellings

Spell the words before the time runs out.  Mr K loves to play this as the word is shown to him and he just needs to type in the word.  He did find it hard to find the letter on the qwerty keyboard but it’s good practice to learn this standard layout.

There is also a function to add your own school spellings to the game.

On the main screen, there is an option to design your own space rocket by choosing from the ranges of pre-design patterns.  See them launch in the app.

So far Mr K has only managed to play with the easy level but he is very keen to play and learn with it. I think it’s great that the app follows the school syllabus and helps him to learn, step by step at his own pace.  The app is inexpensive and it can be used for multiple users too.  So my daughter can be set up as a new user in the app and use it too!

That looks great – I will definitely keep it in mind for Fyfa when she gets a little older.
