Disney’s Jake and the Never Land Pirates – Who Shook Hook? Game Review

20 October 2013 by Eileen 2 Comments

Disney’s Jake and the Never Land Pirates is about a group of young pirates consisting of Jake, Izzy, Cubby and their parrot Skully, who spend their days competing against Captain Hook and Mr. Smee for treasure.
The Who Shook Hook? board game is about Jake and his pirate friends and their Never Land adventures as they seek to outwit the infamous Captain Hook.  The objective of the game is to remove the most treasures from Captain Hook’s hammock without waking him up!
This game is suitable for 4 years and above with 2 – 4 players.  It comes with 1 game board, 1 spinner, 4 movers with bases, 2 tree trunks with tops, 1 hammock, 4 rubber bands, 1 sleeping Captain Hook figure, 3 Barrels, 3 Tiki heads, 3 bags, 3 treasure chests, 1 leaf tweezers, 1 fishing pole, 1 shovel, 1 sword and instructions.
Setting up the palm trees and hammock is very easy.  The game board comes as whole and the spinner is made to look like it’s part of the board but it doesn’t fit together.  This is intentional so the spinner can be passed from player to player.  Both my children who are 4 and 5 didn’t have much problem balancing Captain Hook and the 12  treasures on the hammock but younger children might find it a little tricky.
To play this game, place your character anywhere on the board.  The player with the next birthday goes first.  Spin the spinner.  If you land on a treasure space, use any tools to remove a treasure from the hammock.  My children prefer to use the leaf tweezers as they offer the best grip.  Using shovel, sword or fishing pole to remove is trickier and even mummy struggled!  But this is so much of fun and a great challenge!  If you land on an X space, you remove one treasure of the colour indicated on the space using the tool of your choice.  If you land on a Tool space, you remove any one treasure, but you must remove it with the tool indicted on the space.  If you spin the broken bridge, any player on a bridge space loses one treasure (if they have one) to Tick Tock Croc by placing it under the hammock.  The game finishes when either you have woken up Captain Hook out of the hammock or when all the treasures have been picked up.  Whoever has the most treasures wins.
This is a quick, easy and fun game!  This also helps to improve children’s co-ordination and thinking skills.  We had so much of fun playing it!  The game is the ideal gift for young fans of Jake as well as all kids of a piratey persuasion!  I rate this 5 stars out of 5 and it will definitely be loved by girls and boys!
Its retail price is £19.99 and it is available from all good toy stores, as well as a number of national toy retailers including Argos, Toys ‘R’ Us, The Entertainer, Smyths Toys, Littlewoods, Sainsbury’s and Amazon. For more information, please visit Wonder Forge or Esdevium Games.
