K’nex Classics Motorized Creations

30 March 2022 by Eileen

We are no strangers to K’Nex kits as we have owned quite a few sets in the past. Some of those sets are the Starter kit, Ferris Wheel, Web Weaver Roller Coaster and Architecture London Eye. Through the years, the quality of the pieces are getting better and more flexible, which allows pieces to bend in an odd angle. They are also more durable when disassembling for your next build or storage.

Did you know that K’Nex has been around since the early 90s and is now owned by Basic Fun Toys? Their kits allow individuals to use their imagination to create 3D models using a rod and connector building system. Besides their Classics range, they also have Thrill Rides, K-FORCE Build and Blast, Imagine, Kid K’Nex, Core and Architecture.

We were thrilled to receive this 325-piece Motorized Creations set 85049, which is available to buy from John Lewis. We were really excited when we saw this set, especially as we can create 25 different models including a helicopter, basketball hoop, Formula K car, rocket, house, sand racer and many more. Of course, you can use your imagination to create your own 3D builds.

The kit is suitable for 7 years old and upwards. This set comes with full colour illustrated instructions of two model ideas. For the rest of the model ideas, you need internet access to visit the Basic Fun website where you can view the rest of the instructions for the model ideas.

Ms C is 12 years old and is visually impaired. At the moment, the pieces are a good size/shape for her to hold, and also the colours are quite bold, which makes it easy for her to identify. Also, the online step-by-step instructions are easy to follow and use. Once you’re on the instructions page, click on the image and it takes you to the page.

She chose to build the helicopter, basketball hoop, Formula K car, rocket, pirate ship ride, tri-wheeler and turbo racer. She does struggle with the smaller pieces and needs my help to push them into the rods etc. Also, when it comes to disassembling the models, we both took a while and used a lot of finger power to remove them. It wasn’t an easy job. Even with rough handling, we didn’t break/snap anything and nothing went missing. The pieces are indeed very durable and of great quality.

I love that K’Nex sets promote and help strengthen hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, problem-solving skills, and spatial awareness, all the while putting children on a path towards a greater understanding of STEM subject matter. It did also keep Ms C entertained for a while. The set can be stored away neatly into the box and you can create your next build another day. So what are you building today? Why not comment below and let me know!
