The Outside Of Your Home Deserves A Makeover!

3 July 2019 by Eileen

Your home protects you from the elements, keeps you and your family safe and warm, and is where you spend your most relaxing moments. Of course, that means now and again your home will need a little makeover to keep looking its best. Something you can read all about in the post below.

The Outside Of Your Home Deserves A Makeover

Door

The focal point of the front of most homes is the front door, and that means you really need to get this area right if you want your property to look it’s best.

Of course, most people think it’s all about selecting the right type of colour of the door, which to be fair, can be helpful. For example, UPVC doors that you can see on this website and others like them are not only resistant to weathering, making them low maintenance, but look pretty nice as well. Something that can definitely help to give the front of your home some serious style.

However, it’s not just about the door that you pick but how you dress the entrance of your home as well. What this means is adding things like potted plants or shrubs either side of the doorframe to make more of your entryway. Alternatively, you may wish to add hanging baskets or even add a sign with the number or name of your home on as well. Something that can really help to enhance its look.

Porch

You can go even further than that when improving the entryway of your home and add a porch as well. Something that in the UK tends to be a small enclosure at the front of the home that makes it possible to remove shoes and coat before you get into the house property. The advantage of which is that you can save a lot of mess and disorganisation spreading into your home, as well as add to the aesthetics on the outside.

There are other porch options to consider too, and you may want to go for a more American style offering which includes a deck and cover all the way around. Something that can provide not only an added decorative feature but also the opportunity to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine in the summer. Although, most people that go for this option to have a home that doesn’t overlook neighbours or stands on their own land in privacy.

Front garden

Next, when making over the outside of your home, you must pay special attention to the front garden. In fact, most UK homes on with at least a patch of grass and a few beds at the front, and some have considerably more to deal with.

In particular, it’s essential that your lawn looks as green and healthy as possible, if you want the outside of your home to look sit best. To that end using grass feed, and replacing any dead patches can be a good idea. Additionally, installing automatic sprinklers and irrigation can help to keep your grass as green as possible while cutting out a lot of the hard work involved.

When it comes to flower beds, a touch of colour never goes amiss in the front garden. Although, many flowering plants only have a short time where they are in season, something that means you front garden can look dull for the rest of the year. With that in mind, planting flowers in pots that you can bring out when they are in full bloom may be the most sensible idea. While filling your front beds and boards with shrubs that provide colour and texture all year round.

Finally, if you are lucky enough to have any fencing in your front garden, be sure to take the best care of it that you can. After all, it can really let down the whole ambiance if it’s shabby looking. Happily, you can use sealant and varnish to ensure that your faces look great and are protected from the weather as well. Something you can read more about in my post here.

Gutters

You may not give a lot of attention to your gutters, after all, they are very functional objects that we don’t really notice unless they break down. However, as they are on the front of your home, they do contribute to how it looks and so they will need a makeover once in a while.

To that end, it’s well worth investing in new guttering if you are looking old and tatty. In fact, you can get different colours of guttering pipes now, making it much easier to get one that fits with your homes overall look.

Additionally, it can be a smart idea to invest in netting or cages that go over your guttering, as this can help to stop leaves collecting or bird nesting in there. These issues being problematic because they cause a blockage in the pipes, leading to a build up of water that then spills over the side and can cause staining on the walls. Something that undoubtedly will do nothing for the look of your home.

Windows

Windows and keeping them in the best condition possible is another area that is pretty important when it comes to giving your house a makeover. In fact, if you have window frames that are rotting away, or that have peeling paint it doesn’t really matter how much work you do on the rest of your home, it still won’t look its best!

Of course, that means you must keep your window frame in the best condition possible. Something that means varnishing and treating wooden frames and regularly cleaning plastic ones.

Then there are the windows themselves, which need to be cleaned on the outside as well as on the inside regularly. Luckily, if this is a job that you dread you can invest in a power washer to make it easier, or if you want, get a professional window cleaner to come and do it for you.

In fact, you may just be surprised as to how much of an effect through window cleaning can have here. Who knows, some homes may even look as if they have had a complete makeover, by just getting this one thing done!

Remember that you don’t necessarily have to stick with the windows that your home came with too. There are plenty of replacements and alternatives you could consider to alter the look and feel of your home.

Changing up your windows and their surrounds can dramatically alter the feel of your property. Changing from regular UPVC to a wooden surround can add a rustic charm, while aluminium cladding can give a modern feel in both style and efficiency. Even without major structural changes you can give your home a new lease of life!
