5 Creative Shared Bedroom Ideas

21 November 2018 by Eileen

Some children hate the idea of having to share a bedroom with their sibling, while it may sound like an absolute dream to others. Whichever applies to your family, it is important to ensure that each child has their own space in their shared room, and their personalities still shine through using specific furniture types, colours and accessories.

5 Creative Shared Bedroom Ideas

Here are 5 creative tips on how you can make a shared bedroom personal and fun:

  1. Give Each Child Space

It is important to give each child their own space, starting with providing single beds or, if the room is too small, bunk beds. This will ensure that even though the room is shared, they will still have their own space at night and won’t keep the other child up with snoring or movement.

Room dividers may seem extreme, but curtains in the middle of the room that separates the bedroom for each child can be a good idea. This will give each child the sense of having their own room even though they are sharing it.

  2. Own Storage

It will save plenty of arguments in the future by giving each child their own boxes and shelves for their belongings. This way, neither child can complain about their sibling taking up too much space or items getting mixed up in their own storage.

  3. Colours

Colours can be a hard one, especially if the bedroom consists of a boy and a girl sharing. Choose a colour that isn’t stereotypically related to a gender, such as white or yellow.

If either sibling complain that they don’t like the colour, then suggest to them that they can add posters and frames to their side of the room.

  4. Lighting

Make sure that the lights in the room are split 50/50. If you do end up using a divider, then place it directly under the light so that there is an equal balance of the main light either side of the room.

Allow children to have their own desk lamps on their bedside table too, so that the main light can be turned off if one sibling is tired, and then the side lamp can be turned on if one child wants to stay up a little later to read a book.

  5. Accessories

Let each child add their own accessories to their own side of the room to make it personal to them. For example, let each child add their own rug, and let them choose their own bedding so that, even though it is a shared room, it is still a space they will love hanging out in because it represents their personality.
