The Do’s and Don’ts of Decorating a Nursery

3 March 2018 by Eileen

For many parents, especially those expecting their first child, decorating a nursery is one of the most challenging things to do. It is very tempting to just add everything the baby would need to the (often limited) space, but doing so will make the nursery feel cluttered and less functional.

If you are facing this challenge, you have come to the right page. In this article, we are going to take a look at some of the best do’s and don’ts of decorating a nursery. Let’s get started, shall we?

The Do’s and Don’ts of Decorating a Nursery

Do: Limit the Use of Colours

One of the best ways to make a nursery room feel airy and spacious is by limiting the number of colours you use in it. Instead of adding colours sporadically, start your design process by choosing a colour scheme; don’t forget to stick to the colour scheme as you add more items to the room.

Two or three colours, preferably complementary ones, are great for a nursery room. You can choose to go with pastel colours for a softer toneor opt for bright and vibrant colours if you want a more stimulating atmosphere.

Don’t: Forget the Lighting

The ambience you get in the nursery depends on both colours and lighting, so not choosing the right lighting for the space is a mistake. You want to avoid harsh lighting and untreated windows. You also want to avoid the room being too bright.

Use concealed LED strips or soft LED bulbs to get the best ambience. You don’t have to go with warm lighting since daylight bulbs and LED strips are capable of producing great ambience too. When using big windows and plenty of natural light, add a blind to soften the light.

Do: Stay with a Theme

With colours out of the way, you can start thinking about adding nursery furniture to the space. Buying the nursery furniture in sets is the way to go for two important reasons. First, you can stick to a theme and have a more uniformed look in an instant. This, in turn, makes the room appear bigger and more organized.

The second reason is the savings you can make when buying nursery furniture sets. You save up to 40% when getting the items you need as a set, rather than buying them individually.

Don’t: Forget to Baby-Proof the Space

Just because most nursery furniture and accessories are designed to be baby-proof, doesn’t mean you don’t need to do some baby-proofing of your own. Things like drawers and edges can still be very dangerous for your child.

Don’t wait until the baby is older either. Baby-proof the room as you add new furniture and accessories to the room. You’ll get used to the baby-proofing much sooner and you won’t have to worry about unwanted accidents happening in the nursery when the baby becomes more active.

Don’t: Use Cot Bumpers

Cot bumpers may come in a range of cute designs and look to be able to protect your baby, but this isn’t actually the case. According to The Lullaby Trust, a number of infant deaths have been caused by cot bumpers, and this figure has spiked in the last few years. Instead, your cot should have a nice, firm mattress and be free of bedding like blankets. A clear cot is the safest option for your child.

These are some of the do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when designing a nursery for your baby. If you like this article and you want more nursery do’s and don’ts, be sure to leave a comment below!
