What are the benefits of working with a locum pharmacist agency?

29 June 2023 by Eileen

As people continue to catch on to the benefits of having a healthy work-life balance and experiencing multiple different working situations, locum pharmacy work is really starting to increase in popularity.

The best way of finding locum pharmacy work tends to be through an agency. These specialised agencies can connect qualified pharmacists with places that need an extra pair of hands for a limited amount of time, providing a wide range of benefits.

What are the benefits of working with a locum pharmacist agency

Access to diverse employment opportunities

One of the main benefits of working with a locum pharmacy agency is that you’ll have access to an incredibly diverse range of employment opportunities. You typically get to choose between a wide range of different locations, from community pharmacies all the way to research positions.

Rather than being trapped by a single, multi year contract, you get to try out multiple different working environments and see what’s best for you. This mean’s that it’s unlikely that you’ll ever get bored – if you’re not happy where you’re at, you can simply request that you go somewhere else for your next stint.

A good work-life balance

Another noteworthy advantage of locum work is how flexible it is. If you have interests outside of work you want to dedicate significant amounts of time to, whether that’s travel, spending time with your family, or learning a new skill, then locum work might suit you to a T.

You can generally take time off in between assignments, simply telling your agency when you’ll be ready to start work again. As you’ll also likely receive a higher rate of pay as compared to full-time pharmacists, you should be in a good position to fund that time off as well.

Increased professional growth

If you’re worried about stagnating professionally as a pharmacist, then choosing a locum position can be a great decision. As you get the opportunity to work in multiple different environments, you’ll be able to develop a broad skill set that stands you in good stead for the future.

Additionally, if you want to pursue a single area to a high level, you can always use your time between jobs to take specialist courses in a specific sub-niche of pharmacy.

Competitive pay

As mentioned before, locum pharmacists tend to benefit from competitive pay. This is partly because they aren’t expected to be able to work as many hours a year as a ‘normal’ worker, but it’s also because locum pharmacy agencies are able to negotiate competitive rates on their behalf. In an age of employment where many people are seeing their salaries stagnate while the costs of living continue to rise rapidly, competitive pay is definitely not something to overlook.

There are many other benefits besides these to working with a locum pharmacist agency, but these are some of the core perks. If you’re looking for more work-life balance, a competitive pay rate, and enjoy being placed into diverse situations that encourage professional growth, then working with a locum pharmacy agency is definitely something that you should be looking into.
