Functionality is vital in a kitchen, but personality matters, too

29 November 2022 by Eileen

Kitchens are more than a space where you cook meals – they have evolved into a multifunctional hub that can be used for entertainment and spending time with your loved ones. Modern kitchens aren’t only functional, but also stunning. Perhaps you think your kitchen doesn’t feel as impressive nowadays. Or maybe you haven’t redecorated in a while and are looking for an improvement. Whatever the situation, if you aren’t satisfied with the actual design of your kitchen, it’s time to make a few changes and add some personality to it.

Functionality is vital in a kitchen, but personality matters, too

More often than not, homeowners focus on functionality, and that’s completely normal because you want your kitchen to meet your needs. However, it’s also important to remember that this space is a reflection of who you are – just like the other areas in your home. While redoing your kitchen can be costly, you can add personality to it without spending a fortune. Here are some ideas on how to achieve that.

Choose the right lighting

Why choose dull kitchen lighting when you can take things to the next level? Instead of limiting yourself to spotlights, you can also add under-cabinet lights and lamps to your cook space. A lamp can be an impressive addition to your kitchen’s décor, as its light tones can complement traditional features in the room. Similarly, floor lights under your kitchen’s counters can give your kitchen a futuristic look.

Picking your favourite styles and colours of lighting will help personalise your cook space. Consider combining task lighting with ambient mood lighting. While the former provides illumination for specific areas, the latter creates an intimate feeling in your kitchen.

Incorporate statement pieces

Statement pieces can help inject your personality into the cooking space and add a surprising element that will delight your guests. For instance, you can opt for stone sinks, which are fashionable and hardwearing.

Choose unique handles for your kitchen cabinets, and don’t be afraid to combine different styles to express different facets of your personality. A vintage cabinet, for instance, can be a great statement in a contemporary kitchen and an efficient way to add extra storage too.

Add art

Your living room can seem like the ideal space to hang your favourite art pieces, but that’s not quite right. Decorative pieces are an excellent way to portray your personality and can transform your kitchen too. Consider adding homemade art, as it is inexpensive and can add a familial touch to the space.

Paintings are also an effortless way to design a kitchen that reflects your personality. Sure, you can add art featuring kitchen-related scenes, but don’t limit yourself to that only. All that matters is to choose a piece of art that matches your personality and something you won’t get bored of quickly.

Paint your cabinets

Cabinets are a fundamental element in your kitchen and the first thing that catches guests’ eye. So, it only makes sense to ensure they look impressive. Cabinets come in a wide range of designs; when buying them, it’s crucial to choose a shade that matches your kitchen style.

However, they may become outdated at some point; if that’s the case, a fresh coat of paint will fix that. This is a quick way to inject personality into your kitchen and, at the same time, give your cabinets an upgrade. You can choose a bold colour to create a statement or a neutral one for a more calming atmosphere.

Bring in some plants

Bringing nature indoors is the best way to add life to your cook space. Plants aren’t only visually pleasing, but they also purify the air. Moreover, they have plenty of benefits, such as:

  • Boosting your mood;
  • Reducing stress;
  • Decreasing fatigue;
  • Improving focus, etc.

You can choose among different plants, like peace lily, aloe vera, English ivy, and more. Make sure to research your plant and determine whether it fits your lifestyle.

Consider the dining space

Nothing is more important in your kitchen than the dining space. There’s no point in cooking tasty meals if this area isn’t your reflection of your personality. If you don’t have enough dining space, consider adding a small breakfast nook to one of your kitchen’s corners. It is a comfortable space where you can enjoy your meals.

Instead of using cups and bowls just for serving food, consider mixing and matching them. They are an excellent way to add personality to the kitchen while keeping the design intact.

Keep your kitchen clutter-free

Clutter looks and feels bad and can sometimes even become a safety hazard. Thus, keeping your kitchen uncluttered is paramount, and there are different ways to do that. For instance, you can start by considering which items you use the most. If something doesn’t improve your kitchen’s functionality, it should probably go away.

Another efficient way to declutter your cooking space is by optimising storage space as much as possible. For instance, you can separate utensils by using drawer organisers. Keeping your kitchen clutter-free is no magic; instead, it’s about adopting the right habits.

What does your kitchen say about you?

Kitchens are high-traffic areas, and there’s a high chance visitors step into this room first before going somewhere else in the house. According to a famous saying, you should never judge a book by its cover. While that’s a great principle to live by, it doesn’t really apply to a kitchen. Because let’s be honest, the overall aspect of your kitchen will create a permanent imprint on guests’ minds, and they’ll form an opinion of you based on that.

Everyone has a different perspective on what the perfect kitchen looks like. While some prefer to keep things modern, others would go for a sleek design. And there are also those who love simplicity more than anything else. Are you a conspicuous minimalist or a classy personality? In which ways does your kitchen reflect bits of your personality? If it doesn’t, consider adding design elements that show a part of you, such as art pieces. Use colours that you love, and get creative with your kitchen! Make it unique and do whatever feels good for you – after all, you’re the first one who should be satisfied with the design of your space.
