Have you ever wondered how hybrid cars work? Did you know that hybrid cars have existed since the early 1900s? They did not gain widespread popularity until the mid to late 1990s due to the low price of fuel. With the current fuel situation, many people have had a rethink about hybrid cars.
Now you have the chance to build your very own hybrid engine using this Haynes Hybrid Engine kit. This engine model is intended to illustrate the general principles of a 4-cylinder internal combustion/electric hybrid engine. The hybrid module attached to the combustion engine is non-functional, but it uses fibre optic cables to illustrate the flow of electricity to the battery when the combustion engine is operating and charging is taking place, and how the battery discharges when the engine is operating using a combination of combustion/electricity or using electricity only.
In this video, you will see how the engine demonstrates the internal combustion, eco mode and electric mode. It also shows the contents of the kit and the building it step-by-step.
Many fans will know that Haynes is one of the world’s leading publishers of car and motorcycle manuals and that they are also all about quality and technical ability. You will be very impressed with this 4-cylinder engine!
It is suitable for ages 10 and above. This is a great project for petrol heads who love building and exploring all things mechanical. It is also perfect for children with an interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) principles, helping to build their critical thinking and creative processes.
This is not our first time building a Haynes engine. Mr C and Ms C have previously built a 4 Cylinder Engine AR in less than two hours and a V8 Engine with Mr K, which is slightly bigger than this set which took them nearly six hours to complete.
Inside this box, it comes with over 100 parts and tools, fully illustrated instructions and a guide to the working principles of the engine. This set requires three AA batteries which are not included.
The step-by-step instructions are detailed, but the black and white illustrations are not the best. Building this set requires a lot of focus and concentration. Always check you have placed parts correctly before screwing in. Some intricate steps require perseverance but once built, the engine looks spectacular!
I love all the details on this engine and building it gives them a sense of achievement! I would recommend this set to any car enthusiasts and budding petrol heads!
