How to Incorporate Colour into your Kitchen Extension

8 March 2021 by Eileen

There are many different ways you can decorate your kitchen extension, with bold statement colours or more traditional neutral colour schemes. How you incorporate colour into your kitchen extension can depend on numerous factors, for example the type of extension you have and the amount of light in your extension. However, it does not need to be as difficult as it seems, with some handy tips that can help you decorate your kitchen extension space.

How to Incorporate Colour into your Kitchen Extension

First of all, consider the amount of light entering your new space. If you have skylights in the ceiling of your extension, regardless of whether it is a side return, rear or wrap-around extension, you will have lots of natural light entering the room. If you want to keep your extension feeling bright and airy, stick to a pale colour scheme for painting the walls of your extension, and use colour to add focus points in the room. This could be with colourful artwork, shelves packed with colourful cookery books, or with a coloured splashback.

If you decide on a pale colour scheme for the walls, and want a traditional farmhouse kitchen, it is best to keep your kitchen fittings and cabinets tonal with primary colours. For instance, white walls pair well with pale green wooden kitchen cabinets, instead of dark blue cabinets. To create a more modern looking kitchen, you can go bold in colour for your kitchen fittings, with sleek glazed cabinets and marble worktops.

Perhaps you have a wall you want to bring particular attention to, possibly with pictures or a quirky design feature upon it. A great way to make a wall stand out is by creating a feature wall, painting it a bold colour that immediately draws attention away from the paler colours in your kitchen. Implementing a feature wall can create the appearance of a slightly smaller space, but it works well if you want to impose a cosy area of your kitchen extension.

If you want to create a contemporary look in your kitchen, a new way to include more abstract colouring and texture to the room is to have an exposed brick wall. The Simply Extend team, who are leading UK extension specialists, have worked on several kitchen extension projects that have incorporated an exposed brick wall into their kitchen extension with great effect. It can help to create a modern city décor which is incredibly popular at the moment in cities like London and Birmingham.

Of course, another way to add some vibrant colour into your kitchen extension is with houseplants. Houseplants are becoming increasingly more popular in recent years due to their health benefits and strong colouring. Include houseplants in your kitchen extension by having a shelf over your sink area or decorating the windowsill in your kitchen with herbs or easy to care for houseplants.
