4 Ways to Make Your Space Look Bigger Than it Really is

Most small houses tend to have cramped spaces. Sometimes, the available resources at the time of building the house determine the sizes of its rooms. It may also be that the house is big but some of its rooms are bigger than others. Expanding a small room may be difficult or impossible.

The easiest solution to dealing with small, uncomfortable spaces is by making them appear bigger than they really are. There are many awesome and interesting ways of accomplishing this. Whether it is a bedroom or living room, applying the following tips can help in transforming the outlook of any space.

4 Ways to Make Your Space Look Bigger Than it Really is

  1.    Choice of Color

The color choice can make a room appear smaller or bigger than it actually is. Homeowners who choose wisely can add so much imaginary space to small rooms. There are endless options when it comes to playing with colors to create a sense of larger spaces.

Painting with a light color instead of a darker one opens up a room. It makes the room’s edges appear as if they’re opening up outwards. Chiefly, bright walls reflect more light and maximize the effect that natural light creates. Contrarily, dark colors absorb light, making rooms look smaller.

  1.    Use Large Tiles

If a room looks or feels too cramped, using small tiles is a wrong option. Extra large tiles can create a magical transformation. The few grout lines that such tiles create makes spaces appears larger than usual. The recommended tile sizes for small rooms are between 12-24 inches.

This is a very popular trick since it works perfectly and does not require extra effort. The use of large tiles is based on the concept that the brain associates larger sizes of flooring materials with spacious rooms. Many people won’t believe this until they see it.

  1.    Organize Your Room

Those who have too much stuff that is disorganized in a small room make it feel cramped. It is important to neatly arrange things and keep most of them out of sight. For example, it is wise to use a few pictures or paintings on walls. After organizing and tidying up a room, it looks more open.

  1.    Lighting

Allowing lots of natural light into rooms is another great way of making them appear bigger than they really are. The fact that all rooms can’t have plenty of natural sunlight or great views doesn’t mean one can’t utilize what they have. Therefore, homeowners should avoid hanging heavy drapes around their windows.

For those who do not have enough light some artificial ways could help in brightening up a room to make it feel more inviting and bigger. For instance, adding some creative effects by the use of a lighting fixture can bring about a great difference. Also, placing lamps close to windows opens up spaces.

Conclusion

Small spaces are uncomfortable to stay in. However, it might be costly or impossible to expand them. The easiest solution is to make them feel or look bigger than they really are. Using bright colors and large tiles, organizing the rooms, and allowing more light into these spaces can completely transform them.
