Coventry Transport Museum

18 August 2018 by Eileen Leave a Comment

Things to do in Coventry for free! School holidays can be very expensive, especially with the amount of money you spend just on entrance tickets. So one of the things we always look out for is free events around the Midlands and one of the top things to do is to visit Coventry Transport Museum.

Coventry Transport Museum

It was a bit of a last minute decision to visit as it is not too far from where we live. Coventry Transport Museum is located in the city of Coventry. We had not visited Coventry before and didn’t know what to expect. It wasn’t difficult to get to the museum but parking and driving around the city wasn’t easy. We struggled to find a parking spot and the roads were not very well signposted. We ended up missing a turn and going around the city twice so it took longer than we anticipated.

After a £9.5m redevelopment programme, this huge museum is open to the public and best of all the admission is free! They open most days except 24, 25 & 26 December and 1 January, from 10am to 5pm, with the last admission at 4.30pm. We went on a late Sunday afternoon and it wasn’t too busy at all.

Coventry Transport Museum houses the largest publicly owned collection of British vehicles in the world, and tells the fascinating story of Coventry and its people through the rise and fall of its biggest industry. If you are a transport fanatic, this place is highly recommended for you! It is also great for children to learn the history of transport.

The museum has a huge collection consisting of motor cars, commercial vehicles, bicycles and motorcycles. In addition, they also have an extensive collection of automobilia, books, photographs and a wealth of other archive material is held and conserved at the Coventry History Centre in the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum. They do have a 4D simulator that requires a small fee (£5 for adult, £3.50 for children and £15 for family). We did miss this out as the session started just when we arrived and so we decided not to wait for another 10 minutes for the next show. Anyway, this is a 4D simulator where you experience the thrill of breaking the World Land Speed Record across the Black Rock Desert in America on the 4D Land Speed Record Simulator! Hopefully we will catch it next time when we visit again. I would definitely recommend this museum for all the family. It is very educational, interactive and fun!
