Yo-kai Watch 2 Bony-Spirits & Freshy Souls Review

21 April 2017 by Eileen

Have you downloaded Yo-kai Watch 2 Bony-Spirits & Freshy Souls on Nintendo 3DS yet? Both my children are big fans of Yo-kai Watch ever since they played the original Yo-kai Watch, especially Ms C. Ever since I told Ms C that there would be a new release for Yo-kai Watch 2, she has been pestering me for it!

I am so excited to let you all know that YO-KAI WATCH® 2: Bony Spirits and YO-KAI WATCH® 2: Fleshy Souls for Nintendo 3DS is now available to buy in shop or download from the eshop!

yo-kai watch 2 review

If you are not sure what the Yo-kai Watch game is or haven’t played the original Yo-Kai Watch, let me explain. The storyline for this game has a stronger connection with the TV animation series. It is about sometimes cute, sometimes spooky, and usually mischievous Yo-kai that inhabit our world. Yo-kai are not ghosts, monsters or creatures. Yo-kai are, quite simply, Yo-kai. They cannot be seen by the human eye, but they are everywhere. Whether born from the soul of a deceased human, or an everyday object discovering its higher purpose, their personalities are distinctly human like. Each Yo-kai has its own unique skills and strengths and you’ll use them to challenge the evil Yo-kai and help people in need of solving daily problems – like an argument with a friend or forgetting something important – which may be caused by mischievous Yo-kai hidden everywhere.

In Yo-kai Watch 2, there are over 100 new Yo-kai to befriend with a staggering 350+ Yo-kai in total! This includes all-new “Wicked” Yo-kai like Executives who are powerful, S-ranked humanoid Yo-kai, the Wicked Servants who are a group of Classic Yo-kai, controlled by Wicked creatures, one rank above their usual form, darker and wearing a dark foggy mask and Wicked Creatures who is not registered in the Yo-kai Medallium and cannot be befriended. They are what cause Classic yo-kai to turn in to Wicked forms.

In this Yo-Kai Watch 2, be prepared to travel through time and discover the origins of the first ever Yo-kai Watch. One night, while you are asleep, two sinister Yo-kai wipe away all of your memories, as well as your Yo-kai Watch. You can play as either Nate or Katie as they try to uncover the reasons behind the latest mysteries and disturbances in their hometown. Explore Springdale and discover many new areas beyond it such as all-new locations Harrisville and San Fantastico, both in present day and 60 years ago! Use the new Yo-kai Watch “Model Zero” and discover the new powers it holds! Whisper and Jibanyan continue to be key and are always beside you!

You might wondering, what is the different between YO-KAI WATCH® 2: Bony Spirits and YO-KAI WATCH® 2: Fleshy Souls? First the things to look out for, are the 5 exclusive Yo-kai in each version of the game (which can be traded locally and online in-between versions!). There is a Yo-kai rivalry among those on the “Fleshy Souls” team or on the “Bony Spirits” teams. Your preference in doughnuts is determined by what game you have: For Bony Spirits, you will have to choose Spirit doughnuts. For Fleshy Souls, you will have to like Soul doughnuts.

My children have played with both versions and they love them both. It is depends on which team you would like to pick. They find this Yo-Kai Watch 2 much more fun and easy to navigate around the town using the touch screen. The Direction arrow is easier to see and it guides them to the quickest route. There are more shops to explore and to exchange for goodies. There are over 80 mini quests that will extend the fun of the main storyline. The graphics and animations are better and sharper than the Original. The music theme continues the same tune. During battles, there are only three Yo-Kai on the playing field out of six in total, but you are able to rotate in the others at any time.

For the first time, a fully featured multiplayer mode allows players to trade Yo-kai Medals online and to create a team of their favourite Yo-kai to challenge faraway friends in epic 6 vs 6 battles. Players will also discover the mini-game “Yo-kai Watch Blasters” where they can team up with up to three friends while embodying one of their Yo-kai. We have not tried that yet.

Both my children have been playing it for a week and have been enjoying completing the quests and battles. Both of them have no problem understanding and following the game. This game is suitable for ages 7 and above for 1 to 4 players. The game definitely has a fun and interesting storyline with a nice blend of strategy and action which keeps them both entertained. I would definitely recommend it.
