Spring Sensory Activity: Clean Mud

Clean mud is also known as Ghost mud which is commonly used for sensory activity. It smells fantastic. How did it get its name? Well, I heard from friend that it originated from prison which I can understand why. In prison, the one things that they allow in their cell are soap, toilet paper and water! They must have been bored with time to kill and invented this clean mud to play in their cells! Clean mud feels like Play Doh but it is very wet and slippery!

Nevertheless, clean mud requires minimal ingredients to make! Earlier this week, I popped by to my local Tesco supermarket and bought some Palmolive soaps which is one of the main ingredients. It has been a long time since I last used soap! My dad was the only person in the house who used to use it!

Colgate Palmolive Soap

Ingredients:

  • Soap
  • Toilet paper
  • Glitter

Household items:

  • Grater
  • Bowl or cup
  • Huge dish/container

Method:

  1. Grate the soap into small little chunks.

I have bought the Palmolive with Olive. It smells really nice and soapy! As the soaps are green in colour, they are not suitable for mixing with finger paints to make different coloured mud. You could use a more neutral ivory colour soap to make different colour mud.

  1. Shred the toilet paper into small chunks.

We used Cushelle as their papers are quite soft and fluffy. It breaks easily when mixed with water. So we didn’t need to shred the toilet paper into small chunks.

  1. Add water and start mixing. If it is too dry, add more water. If it too wet, add more papers! Then give your children a cup or bowl to play with! We have also added glitter in the clean mud to make it like a magic soil!

We took it outside the house and pretended that the clean mud is magic soil. Ask the children to get a few plants/leaves/flowers to plant in it and sprinkle glitter to pretend it is a magic potion to make it grow!

My son loves the texture and feel! He had so much fun playing with it! This activity can get quite messy so it is best to play with it outside the house or protect your house with plenty of plastic sheets.

Have you tried this clean mud before? If not, would you try it?

Did you know that soap can also used to mask the smell of dirty laundry in your luggage? So next time, try popping one in your luggage to keep them smell fresh! Soap can also be use to smooth zips and act as shaving foam! Have you used soap for anything else?
