How to Improve The Air Quality In Your Home

7 July 2023 by Eileen

All of us have come across stories about how air pollution impacts our health and well-being. While we may assume that being indoors can keep us safe from pollution, it is not true. Outdoor air pollution can be a huge concern but you must understand that the air that flows inside your home isn’t pure or completely free from pollutants. Air pollution is the biggest environmental risk to public health in the UK and it leads to 30,000 deaths annually. The quality of air that you breathe indoors is very important and the level of air pollutants could be equally high. It can lead to cancer, asthma, pneumonia, health disease as well as low birth weight.

How to Improve The Air Quality In Your Home

If you have someone with a heart condition in your home, they have a higher risk of developing health concerns due to the quality of air. There are steps you can take to improve indoor air quality and reduce the risk of health conditions. It could also help improve the quality of your life. Let’s take a look at a few ways you can do this.

1. Eliminate the pollutants

One way to keep the indoor air clean is to learn about the different sources of pollution and try to avoid pollutants when possible. Some of the most common pollutants are radon which can cause lung cancer, smoke which can lead to respiratory troubles, and formaldehyde which is an organic compound and is emitted by a few household items. It is possible to remove these pollutants from your home. Get a home test kit and check the level of pollution. If there is a smoker in your home, try to get them to reduce smoking. Lastly, avoid using cleaning products since they contain a lot of harmful chemicals that might linger in the air for long. It includes air fresheners, cleaning sprays, and glass cleaners.

2. Check the air quality

An ideal place to start is by checking the air quality in your home. If you have a home testing kit, you can use it or call a professional. Using a home test kit might be easier but it will not be comprehensive because it might only allow you to check for a single pollutant. On the other hand, professional testing might cost more but will give you a satisfying result.

3. Control the allergens

It is common to find several irritants and allergens in the home including mold and dust. The easiest way to improve the air quality is to keep them at bay, it will also reduce the chances of respiratory symptoms. However, you need to take preventive strategies to control the allergens and you can do this by bathing and brushing the pet regularly, regularly cleaning and dusting to keep the dust and pet dander from accumulating, and replacing the carpet when you see mold growing. These are simple yet effective strategies to keep the air inside your home clean.

4. Invest in an air conditioner system

You can enjoy cleaner and cooler air with an air conditioner system in your home. All air conditioners come with a dust filter in the indoor unit and it will trap the dust and stop it from clogging the internal system. When you invest in an air conditioner for your home, you are also investing in an air purifier which will improve the environment indoors. The professionals who handle AC installation in Pompano Beach FL state, “Installing an air conditioner can change your life in many ways, besides keeping the home cool, it also improves the air quality you breath.”

5. Improve ventilation

You need to keep the air flowing in your home and this is a simple but effective way to improve air quality. Simply open the doors and windows to let some outside air flow through but you need to ensure that the air is clean. Air will also enter your house from the vents or tiny spaces around the windows and doors and there isn’t much you can do about it, you need to ensure that the air doesn’t lead to more problems. You can do this by changing the filters in the home HVAC systems, and ensuring that the ducts in the home are clean.

There are many factors that can have an impact on the air quality in your home and they can lead to several health problems. However, there are ways you can handle it and the first step is to test the indoor air quality. It will bring you peace of mind if you are always worried about the pollution levels. Once you know the level of pollution, you can take the necessary steps to reduce the problem of pollutants and improve the quality of air in your home, thus, reducing the chances of long-term or short-term health problems in the house.
