The Beginner’s Guide to Buying a Divan Bed in 2026

5 May 2026 by Eileen Leave a Comment

Buying a new bed is often a bigger decision than people first realise. Most of us default to a standard bed frame because it’s what we know, but there are other options worth considering.  Divan beds offer a level of practicality that frames just can’t match. They typically take up less floor space, which is a massive plus if you’re working with a smaller bedroom.

Instead of having legs that stick out and a frame that extends beyond the mattress, a divan is essentially a sturdy box. This design makes the bed much easier to fit into tight corners or alcoves. It’s worth pointing out that the construction of the base will directly affect how your mattress feels and how long it lasts.

The Beginner's Guide to Buying a Divan Bed in 2026

The Base

The base of a divan is what sits directly beneath your mattress, and it plays a bigger role in comfort than most people realise. The most common option is a platform top base, which uses a reinforced timber frame with a flat, upholstered surface. This creates a firm, stable foundation that works well with all mattress types, including memory foam.

When you look at different styles, you will see that divan beds with headboards provide a complete, cohesive look right away. You won’t need to worry about matching a separate headboard later, as these sets are designed to work together perfectly.

Consider the Base Height and Depth

A standard deep divan usually sits on small glides, making it easy to move. These are the most common and offer the most drawer space. However, if you want a more modern look, you might prefer a shallow divan base.

Shallow bases are thinner and usually sit on longer legs. This gives the bed a lighter, more floating appearance which can make a room feel more open. The trade-off is that you won’t get the same storage capacity as a deep base. You will need to think about whether you value the aesthetic of the legs over the practicality of the drawers.

Storage Options for Modern Bedrooms

One of the best things about a divan is the amount of storage it can provide. Because the base is a hollow box, manufacturers can fit drawers into almost any configuration you need. This is much more efficient than sliding plastic tubs under a normal bed frame where they collect dust and look messy.

You can choose from several different drawer layouts depending on your room size:

  • Two drawers located on the same side for compact rooms where the bed is against the wall.
  • Two drawers on opposite sides of the bed for easy access.
  • Four full-sized drawers for maximum storage of bedding and clothes.
  • Continental drawers which are smaller at the head end to allow for bedside tables.
  • Side-opening or end-opening ottoman bases that lift up to reveal the entire base area.

Fabric Choices

The final step is picking the right fabric. Most modern divans come in a wide range of materials, from hard-wearing linens to plush velvets. Grey and beige remain popular because they fit almost any decor, but don’t be afraid to go for a bold colour if the bed is the focal point of the room.

Synthetic fabrics are often easier to clean, which is something to keep in mind if you have pets or young children.

Signing Off

A divan bed is a smart investment for anyone who wants to maximise their bedroom space without sacrificing comfort. You will find that these beds are far more versatile than traditional frames, especially when you factor in the massive range of fabrics and headboard styles available today.

Take the time to measure your room carefully before you buy, especially if you are opting for drawers. You will need enough clearance on either side of the bed to pull them out fully. Once you have the right configuration, your new bed will provide a tidy, comfortable, and stylish place to sleep for years to come.
