6 Tips for Maximizing Space in a Small Home

27 March 2026 by Eileen Leave a Comment

Do you always find yourself with little room in your home and wishing that you had more? People with small homes often have struggles with storage space and with finding enough room to do normal, everyday activities. They feel cramped and even claustrophobic, and that makes it difficult for them to be at peace. It also makes it hard for them to feel like their home is neat and tidy.

If that is a problem you deal with, then we have some helpful tips for you. These should allow you to make more space and to use the space you have much more effectively.

6 Tips for Maximizing Space in a Small Home

Make Use of Open Wall Space

If you have walls that are not being used to hang pictures and that have free space on them, then you can install floating shelves there. These can even hang above furniture like couches and chairs so that you are maximizing all of your available wall space. Just be sure to install the shelves securely and then don’t place anything on the shelves that would weigh them down so much that they would become a hazard.

Your walls are potential storage space, if you know how to use them well, and we suggest choosing spaces that are not in use currently and adding shelves there and then filling those with appropriate items. In other words, don’t just fill up shelves just to fill them and don’t add shelves just to add them. Be strategic about your decisions with both shelf installation and shelf filling, but you should also use that space to its fullest potential to give yourself more room in a crowded home.

Regularly Declutter

Many homes feel small simply because the homeowners are not careful about what they keep around. If your house is full of stuff that you don’t use or don’t need, then you may want to declutter it, and the more frequently you declutter, the more space you will have in your home.

Decluttering is not as simple as picking a room and moving through it with a garbage bag in hand. You need to be thoughtful and intentional about your choices. If you are not careful, you could toss to something casually that you really do need later on. Give yourself enough time to make your choice with wisdom about what to toss out, what to store away, what to give away, and what to keep. You can also create a pile for things that you are not decided on yet and then come back to them later. The great thing about regular decluttering is that it will help put you in a decluttering mindset. So, even when you are not tidying up, you will be thinking about what you can get rid of and what you want to keep.

Shift Furniture Strategically

Another helpful tip to make more space when you have little room is to move your furniture around the house in such a way that you create more space to move. You will still end up with just as much floor space, but you will use it more effectively. If your furniture is not up against the wall in places where it could be, then push it that extra few inches. You see, when furniture is not flat against the wall, you are wasting space. No one can use that few inches behind the couch, but everyone can make use of any additional space in front of it.

As you move the furniture around, be sure to clean well in those areas where the furniture was resting. You may need to call in experts in cleaning for Miami, FL or in your local area if there is a lot of cleaning to do, but the effort will be worth it. You can make extra space by moving furniture to create larger pathways. Think about where you move through each room and then push furniture in such a way that you open up those pathways more.

Remove Items from the Floor

Your floor space is valuable, and the more items you can move away from there and put up on a shelf or into storage, the more floor space you will end up with. More floor space means that your house becomes roomier.

Are you using your floor space wisely or is it occupied by boxes, knickknacks, bags, toys, books, and other items that could be stored elsewhere? Some of these items could be placed into a storage shed or in a closet. They may serve you better if they are put away on a shelf or under the bed so that you have more floor space to work with. Any areas of the house where you can take items off the floor and store them away will open up and make that space feel roomier.

Change Your Doors

Do you feel like your doors take up a lot of room when they open and close? Doors that open into small spaces can feel constricting and can take already tiny spaces and make them feel tinier.

We suggest installing what are known as pocket doors. This is simply another name for sliding doors, and you can have them installed anywhere you need extra space and the door. That way, your doors do not open into already tight spaces.

Buy Furniture with Multiple Functions

Furniture can help you save space if you have the right kind. Multifunctional furniture can take up the same amount of space as regular furniture but can also be used for storage. A coffee table with a shelf underneath can be used to store magazines. A bed with a pull-out drawer on the bottom can be used to store away extra bedding.

These are a few ways you can make better use of the space you already have and take the small house and make it feel more open and roomier. You don’t have to spend a lot of money or do massive renovations to make your house have more room, just implement some of these smart changes.
