23 January 2023 by Eileen

If you are looking for ways to keep your kids entertained at home while also teaching them something new, look no further than these 5 easy and fun Chinese activities for kids. With these activities, your kids can learn about Chinese culture, practice their Mandarin language skills, and have a great time in the process.

5 Easy and Fun Chinese Activities for Kids At Home

Cooking

Not only is cooking a fun way to spend time with your family, but it’s also an ideal way to introduce kids to the flavours of traditional Chinese cuisine. There are many delicious options, from simple fried rice dishes to more complex dumpling recipes. You can also make some snacks like sweet or savoury Chinese egg tarts. You can help your child learn more about Chinese recipes by buying them a Chinese cookbook or printing some recipes online.

Games

Kids love playing games; therefore, you can use this opportunity to teach them about China’s rich gaming history. Mahjong is popular all over Asia, while Wei-Chi is another strategy game that goes back thousands of years. For younger children, you could play card games such as Go Fish with specially made cards featuring characters from traditional Chinese stories. Chinese four-color card games, Chinese chess, and the Takenoko board game are other terrific options.

Language Learning

Learning Mandarin can be challenging but also rewarding, particularly for kids. Start by introducing your child to the basics of pronunciation and simple words. You can make it more interactive by playing games like “name that animal” or “guess the word” with your kids.

There are also plenty of resources online that make learning Mandarin accessible for children of all ages. This activity will help reinforce what they’ve already learned while allowing them to explore the language before taking formal classes. You can also find platforms to learn Chinese for kids in the comfort of their homes. Many professionals are providing online classes for kids to make them more interactive. With research, you can find the best one available to help your child learn Chinese.

Crafts

Arts and crafts can be both educational and entertaining at the same time. Have your kids draw or paint pictures of classic Chinese symbols like dragons or pandas, or make paper lanterns using colourful construction paper and glue or a Chinese New Year pineapple, which they can hang up as a decoration in their room. You could also try origami to create traditional shapes like birds and boats. There are endless possibilities for crafts, so get creative with your kids and have fun!

Cultural Exploration

Exploring China’s rich culture is a great way to introduce your child to different aspects of Chinese life. Read stories about famous emperors or fairy tales such as “The Monkey King.” Watch a classic Chinese film or show, or take a virtual tour of the Great Wall. You can also have your child create artwork and crafts inspired by ancient China or try their hand at traditional calligraphy.

There are many annual cultural festivals that you can celebrate with your family. Many of these celebrations have a special significance in China, such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese New Year. Let your child learn about the customs and traditions of these festivals as you observe them. They can also wear traditional Chinese clothing and learn how to perform dragon and lion dances.

These five easy and fun Chinese activities for kids at home are sure to be educational and entertaining. From cooking delicious recipes to exploring China’s culture, your children can learn something new while having a great time. Try these activities today and watch your kids explore the world of Mandarin and Chinese culture in their homes.
