Creative Ways To Use Bar Stools In Your Home

21 October 2022 by Eileen

Considering tables and chairs are the most popular furniture items in your home, there are few seating options as versatile as the bar stool. While they have been traditionally used in your home bar or placed around a kitchen island to maximise space usage, more opportunities are available to utilise these versatile pieces.

Despite the extensive colours and styles available for purchase, narrowing down your needs will help make finding the perfect choice for you more straightforward, whether traditional black metal or RJ Living’s range of kitchen stools.

Things to Consider

Before rushing out to buy your bar stools, it will be worth your time to better understand precisely what you are looking for. It would be best if you considered things like the materials used and the colour of the stool. Do these factors complement what is already in the space you want to change?

Next, double-check the correct height of the stools, ensuring they fit comfortably under the tabletop while maximising the available space. There are few things more uncomfortable than trying to sit correctly on a bar stool that is too high and, therefore, too cramped at a table.

Adding to the comfort level, you have to consider whether it is possible to instal foot rails to use once seated or if you are going to buy stools with built-in rails. These significantly affect how a person can sit and safely get on and off the chair. Additionally, it would be best if you chose stools that have a backrest. While you can get away with no backrest for casual kid’s seats, omitting this detail will make it difficult to relax while sitting.

Lastly, take a moment to think about the kinds of people who will make the most use of these items. Bar stools are notoriously challenging to get onto for older people, those with mobility issues, and small children. They may prove to be more hassle than they are worth.

Family Room

While it may not be acceptable in all households, most people enjoy eating their meals and watching TV simultaneously. To achieve this, you usually find yourself cradling your plate on your lap, finding the best way to sit comfortably and eat properly on the couch.

Instead of this constant hassle and continuous spilling hazard, build a small seating spot in your lounge that can easily fold away or flip into a working area when unused. A simple table with a minimal design and neutral colour matches perfectly with equally minimal bar stools for a quick eating set-up.

Nook with a View

If you live in a big city, you have likely already accepted that your living space will be on the smaller side of things. Additionally, you might find that the best views from your home are going to come from a window that is somewhat out of the way and not part of your usual living space.

In this case, adding a small table ledge or shelf to the bottom of the window frame will create the perfect place to add one or two simple barstools for your breakfast in the morning or a nightcap before bed. Alternatively, it can become an ideal place to do some reading or work as there will be additional natural light at your disposal.

Kids Craft Room

Depending on your home’s size and layout, you might struggle to find the extra space needed for your little ones to do painting, colouring and crafts. But, on the other hand, you might want to protect your nice furniture from paint and ink marks for a little bit longer.

Regardless of your wants, a small kid-size table with matching bar stools is an effortless and quick way to add an art corner to any room. And thanks to their size, they can easily be stored away until needed.

Unique Designs

Having bar stools around your home bar or along the island in your kitchen is probably the most standard way you can use these chairs. But changing up the design and colour could be precisely what you need to breathe fresh new life into your decor.

For more masculine spaces, consider going for a mixture of wood and leather, while more sophisticated spaces can be made with various metals, with cushions in subtle, neutral colours. Finally, if you are feeling very creative, stools made with hard plastic can be found in a variety of colours and exciting patterns to add a bold pop of colour.

Side Tables

There is no rule that says bar stools can only be used to sit on. However, thanks to the vast array of options to choose from, including height, colour and shape, you can completely change the piece’s function.

One creative way of doing this is by turning it into a side table for your living room, lounge, or bathroom. You can find smaller options at great prices and have the peace of mind of knowing they are sturdy enough to hold a drink, book, or small potted plant.
