Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine Augmented Reality Review

4 June 2021 by Eileen

This coming Father’s Day, why not treat your loved ones to this ultimate gift – Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine with augmented reality features for car enthusiasts and budding petrol heads! You get to build this awesome working engine featuring real engine roars with the authentic Haynes Build Your Own Engine sets.

Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine AR Review

Many fans will know that Haynes is one of the world’s leading publisher of car and motorcycle manuals and that they are also all about quality and technical ability. You will be very impressed with this 4 Cylinder Engine with augmented reality features that I will show you! It is suitable for aged 10 and above. This is the ultimate gift for dads and petrol heads – ideal for the man who has it all. It is also perfect for children with an interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) principles, helping to build their critical thinking and creative processes.

Haynes 4 Cylinder Engine AR box

This is not the first Haynes Build Your Own Engine set that Mr C has built. He had previously built the V8 Engine with Mr K, which is slightly bigger than this set. It took them nearly six hours to complete. As for this set, it only took him and Ms C less than two hours to build.

Inside this box, it comes with over 100 parts, step-by-step instructions and a guide to the working principles of the engine. This set is a simplified version of a real car engine with a non-functioning water pump, throttle body, dipstick (without oil), flywheel and clutch. To keep it simple, these components which are fitted to a full-size engine don’t appear on this engine: oil filter, cooling system, air filter, connecting rod bearings, piston ring, oil pump, alternator and starter. This requires two AA batteries which are not included.

The step-by-step instructions are detailed, but the black and white illustrations are not the best. Building this set requires a lot of focus and concentration! Many times, he thought he had placed it correctly only to discover that he had to unscrew everything again to fix some of the parts, like repositioning the casing as it was in the wrong direction!

There are some intricate steps that require some perseverance but once built, the engine looks spectacular! I love all the details on this engine and building it definitely gives them a sense of achievement!

This set comes with a paper mat that works with a special augmented reality app which is available from both the Apple and Google Play Stores. This creates an interactive experience where you can see an exploded view of the engine with five animations of key components and detailed descriptions of 11 different engine parts plus the engine sound.

I would recommend this set to any car enthusiasts and budding petrol heads! You can get this set and others from Argos and Amazon, Maplin, Menkind and other leading retailers. Also, do check out Trends UK’s full range of Haynes Build Your Own Engine Kits on their website!
