Polaroid Play 3D Pen Review

5 May 2019 by Eileen

This Polaroid Play 3D pen allows you to build your own 3D models with ease. You can also use their free Polaroid Play Trace app (App Store and Google) to stencil your own photographs and bring them to life or use the existing stencils to create and assemble 3D models! I love doing crafts as my pastime and this Play 3D pen is just what I need to create endless possibilities!

This kit comes with Polaroid Play 3D pen, pen holder, 1.5m USB cable (USB power adapter is not included), four 5m PLA Plastic Filament Packs in red, green, black and translucent colours, start guide and Trace App screen protector with fixing pads.

As mentioned above, it doesn’t come with a USB power adapter so you have to source one before you start using it. The pen has to be connected to the mains at all times during use. It does not come with rechargeable batteries. I do find it quite annoying as the cable gets quite heavy and bothersome after a long period of use. Nevertheless, the pen itself is quite lightweight and easy to use. The pen does feel quite plasticky but it reflects in the price.

Before I start using the pen, I watched this near 10-minute video below which I found very helpful! It is definitely worth a watch to give you a better idea of how to use it efficiently and with tips on how to draw.

To use the pen, simply turn on the mains and press the on button. Once the light turns from red to blue, it is ready to use. I find it easy to insert the filaments and to change it. It would be nice if it came with more colours in this kit though. If you are thinking of getting this pen, then I would recommend getting more filaments! Once you start, you won’t want to stop making more creations!

As this is my first time using it, I started off with a simple model which I found online. It took me a couple of minutes of using it before I was able to draw a straight line! This pen also allows you to increase or decrease the speeds of which there are four. I am quite an impatient person so I prefer to use the fastest speed! It still comes out slow and steady.

My children are very impressed with this pen and love the model I created. It took me an hour to create but it is enjoyable. I like this pen as it is easy to set up and use and is good value for money. I would definitely recommend it as a starter to 3D craft.
