Hearing Things is a lip-reading challenge game by Hasbro Gaming suitable for aged 12 and above, to play between four to eight people. It comes with a set of game headphones with built-in sounds and timer, 150 cards with 600 phrases and instructions.
The Hearing Things game is Hasbro’s twist on the online viral “Whisper Challenge” sensation which has you guessing what you think your teammate is saying by reading their lips. To play the game, you need to have at least two teams of two. Then pick a colour (orange, pink, yellow and green) and use a different colour next game to keep it fresh. Then one player puts on the speech-cancelling electronic headphones and the other player whispers the random phrase shown on the card such as, “I need new pens” or “Just how smart are smartphones”.
The headphones have a one-minute built-in timer and requires 2 AAA batteries which are not included. Once the start button is pressed, a light will turn on and sounds will automatically run for 60 seconds. The headphones are lightweight with padded cushions on the ear pieces. It is slightly adjustable to fit most children and adults. The sounds limit the hearing of the player wearing the headphones by playing lots of random speaking voices. The headphones do not totally cancel the outside noises properly – as you might have guessed, these are not top of the range noise cancelling headphones, so players need to limit their speaking voice. The player has to figure it out to earn the card and whoever with the most cards wins.
We all enjoy playing the game and will definitely play it again and again. This is a great family party game and the phrases are not too long and difficult to guess. It is available to buy from good toy retailers including Amazon.
